Lawnmowers & The Buying Of

I believe that the noises and slightly acrid smell our 19 year old Flymo gave off today indicate that the motor is about to go kaput, it hasn't been cutting well anyway and cuts out from time to time since retrieving it form the back of the shed last month for summer lawn duties.

So not having had to buy one for ages, what are the best, reasonably priced - say under £120 - options that I might consider is any of you good folk would care to comment? I'd like it to be adjustable in terms of height and easy to push as the good lady sometimes cuts the front lawn - but not the awkwardly sloped large lawn at the back.

Thanks in advance

I have a Honda petrol motor. It was more than £130 prob closer to £300 if not more but I’ve used it for over ten years with no hassle , just annual maintenance. If I was buying one today I would get the best electric one I could afford as
Per the size of your lawn . They are far less aggro , I’ve got to change the oil etc every year and there’s less hassle with an electric one

The cheaper end of the flymo qualcast range really are built of Lego bricks and feel cheap. If you can move up do so. It will be more economical in the long run.

We just bought a macallister petrol. We bought the self propelled one as we have a big garden. What a difference it makes compared to the hand propelled. Cutting the lawns is a breeze now. I personally would always go with petrol rather than electric.

Size of lawn to be cut? is it mainly flat? bosch electrics are good only issue I have is that is for most mowers collection boxes too small unless get a larger mower 36cm +
I have a bosch and back lawn 10m square done and dusted in less than 15 mins and the grass collection compacts a lot of grass

I love my petrol mower. We do have a 50 metre garden, but I find it much less hassle than an electric one, even ignoring the chord. My wife hates it because she tries to push it as she is afraid to pull up the ba that makes it move on its own. She thinks it may career out of control.

For a small lawn ( though I have used these on big lawns in a pinch)- a self propelled Honda Izy is a breeze to start and cuts/and collects well ( in reasonable conditions) and will last for years - it is so light, that even the NON self propelled is easy to push - I have a lot of mowers - from Large greenkeepers cylinders - 73 inch TURBO Toro Timemaster - to 60+ year old atcos - 4 stroke is where it is at for me.
Honda Izys do tend to hold their price second-hand - but you could get lucky and score a good one for 120 sovs

I mean battery powered

Never seen a battery powered one! On a similar subject I was looking for a good cordless hedge trimmer. We have a very mature garden with lots of big bushes so it has to be a hard worker, so to speak.

Any suggestions from folks that own one?

Cheers all will have a look at the Bosch range and possibly push out to slightly bigger as suggested.

Someone mentioned Toolstation has a 10-15% off some gardening equipment going on but perhaps it's finished or lawnmowers aren't included as I saw no 'deals' on them.

I use a G Tech falcon. Great mower, cordless and the battery stays charged for ages. I also use the G Tech cordless hedge trimmer and branch cutter. Might cost a bit more, but well worth it.
