Lake District Hotels

Looking to go in a few weeks for 2 or 3 nights, thinking of staying in Ambleside or Windermere with the wife and small baby, or if anyone would recommend other places to stay?

Haven't been for such a long time. Can anyone recommend any nice hotels? Everything looks so expensive online. I don't mind paying as long as its decent but even the small B&B's are charging over 200/night.

Cheers :)

Have you looked at Airbnb for short term rentals?

I think everywhere has gone up now for stays. Was looking at newcastle next Saturday and most decent hotels are £150 when we used to stay over for about £70

I guess it's because of the cost of travel etc more people are just staying in the Uk

The Lakes was getting expensive before COVID but it's ridiculous now. You need to pick when you go quite carefully nowadays to avoid being completely fleeced. Just been checking prices and it's looking steep for midweek in a few weeks time.

You'd be better off jumping on a cheap flight to be honest. You'll get better weather, better hospitality, better food and drink.

I agree.

My girlfriends best friend just moved to Hastings for work... It's cheaper for the four of us (two couples) to fly to Barcelona for 3 nights, with an all inclusive hotel, than it is for us to get a train to visit them.

Yep, totally agree. I wouldn't consider doing anything in the UK from a cost point of view.

I was looking at going to the south coast (from London) for a few days and it was extortionate, no matter where I looked.

As already mentioned have a look at what Air BnB's are available. I have a lovely place booked near Ambleside next month for a few days and it certainly was a lot cheaper than a hotel or traditional B&B.

We used to like the Daffodil at Grasmere but it’s got pricey now especially in the holidays.

We stayed in Coniston a couple of years ago, in the Coniston Inn just off the lake. Perfect quiet location with 3 pubs all within 500 yards of each other. Plenty of walks around the village and steeped in history with the Bluebird story.

Would highly recommend, I think it was £350 for 2 nights back in 2020 though so may have gone up again.

I’ve stayed at a cracking airb&b in Kendal a few times, lovely place, host lives downstairs. If you could go that far out from Ambleside.

Have a look at coppermines.co.uk

They have loads of good quality rentals. My aunts place is a cracker - The Stables Knotts Farm Windermere.

recently stayed a couple of days at The Inn in Ambleside.
Weather was rubbish but the hotel was really lovely and sited right in the centre.

Its not just BA, Easyjet cancelling lots of flights too. Besides I have been abroad a lot, even through Covid so specifically want to visit the lakes and its just for 2/3 nights anyway. Cheers
Air BnB have cottages all over the Lakes. There's some excellent quality accommodation with them too.

I think this depends how many people you have.
We have just booked a lodge for a family of 5 in the New Forest for in August. £1,700 for 7 nights.

Thought it seemed expensive so started looking for holidays in Greece/Turkey/Balaerics as an alternative option. Wasn't finding anything for less than £3,000 and that was for less than appealing accommodation. Doesn't seem to be such thing as a cheap break away for a family of 5.
