Currently entered for the Hillary Needler at Beverley. This is normally a hot sprint race. Planned for Saturday. She must be highly thought of if she takes her chance in this sort of company. Good luck to all concerned.

Nice one Nosmo, I'll be watching out for it. Best of luck....Had my first ever winner at Beverley backing on a course in the first race the horse was called Not Yet still remember. Been there plenty of times and won a few quid over the years on a course specialist call Touch Above. They even have a race named after it now. The pub next to the course is called Nelly's by locals but I don't think that's it's real name. If it's still going...

Touch Above, was trained by David Barron and ran in the pink and green diamonds of Jean Hazell who had a lot of decent horses with Barron over the years usually sprinters, unlike Touch Above who won 8 times round Beverley all over 10 furlongs and loved really firm going a road would of suited him.

The course specialist I remember from Beverley was John Spearing's Rapid Lad who 11 times round Beverley again primarily at 10 furlongs.

Lady Ayresome is already a course winner and the softer ground should suit her, if she performs well then the Queen Mary at Ascot could be on the cards although the stable have one or two other contenders, the last Hilary Needler winner, Liberty Beach, showed the calibre of horse that has previously won the race and dual Guineas winner Attraction took this in her unbeaten champion two year old season.

Nice One, I think they have named a race after Rapid Lad also. 👍

You’re literally a mine of useless information Nobby 👍🏻

I remember a winner of the Hillary Needler in the 70’s that was more than useful - Devon Ditty. Incidentally the Needler family owned a confectionery company in Hull. Renowned for sweets in jars sold by the quarter/ half pound!

Devon Ditty, McAlpine horse (Green, Yellow Sleeves, Scarlet Cap) trained by Tom Jones, I think Paul Cook rode her in the Hilary Needler, was a non-staying favourite in the '79 1000 Guineas but bounced back as a decent sprinter for the rest of her career and was the first high profile horses John Gosden trained in the States.

There was the Brian Yeardley Conditions race for the Colts, too, that was ran on the same evening which was won by some decent horses over the years, think Beverley is a good test for prospective Royal Ascot two year olds with the stiff finish providing a similar test.

Do you just remember this stuff AM or do you have to look it up?

Remember most of it, Laughing, I'm much better with stuff from the first half of my life rather than the second half.

I'm currently in the middle of a racing history research project on racing colours so bits get refreshed and other bits I didn't know pop up.

I can do most big race winners colours from memory.

Impressive. I was trying for 2 days to recall the sprinter that curley had that won more handicaps in a season than any other horse. A record I believe still stands. It came to me today, I think, glencroft. Who was tubed and went on to win 15 handicaps in a season. Now I have no idea if any of that is correct or not, but its how I remember it.

Glencroft was trained by David Chapman at Stillington, just outside Easingwold, was owned by Martin Wane (Light Blue, Light Green Sleeves, Black Cap) he won 9 Handicaps from 5 furlongs to a mile in 1988, that same season Chapman also trained Chaplin's Club for Peter Savill (Maroon, Light Blue Sleeves and Cap, Maroon Diamond) who won 9 handicaps over 5f and 6 furlongs, Chaplin's Club had also won 9 handicaps in the 1985 season and won his last race at Redcar in 1992.

I think Kevin Darley rode Chaplins Club to all 18 of those handicap success and that Stuart Webster was aboard Glencroft for most of his wins.

Ok so got all that wrong. Did curley have a sprinter that won a load of handicaps in a season after being tubed at 3 years old? Or is my old man memory just that crap?

Nobby Barnes was officially the worst racehorse ever after a record number of races without a win.... pretty sure that's right anyway

I can’t think of one off the top of my head, Laughing, Curley (Black, White Hooped Sleeves, Red Cap) was more a one off plotter than a sequencer and most of the horses I associate with him would be middle distance types. Glencroft was tubed but was a David Chapman horse, pretty certain he was with Chapman throughout his career as well.

No that was Quixall Crossett (White, Royal Blue Spots, Purple Sleeves and Cap) trained by Ted Caine at Chop Gate, raced a 103 times without winning a race. He was a staying chaser who ended up with a fan club and ran several decent races in defeat.

Nobby Barnes, was trained and owned by Don Enrico Incisa (White, Light Blue and Yellow Striped Sleeves, Light Blue and Yellow Quartered Cap) at Coverham near Middleham and won half a dozen races under Kim Tinkler, pretty sure he beat Royal Ascot winner High Premium once in a race.

That's incredible knowledge, you need to write a book or something 👍😁
