Lack of class and respect sadly lacking in this board

So to get your point over your comparing Nigel Lawson to Jimmy Saville, Fred West and Peter Sutcliffe. Sad but sums up the type of poster on here these days. šŸ™

Oh dear
I havenā€™t compared Lawson to Saville

People respect/like others for all sorts of reasons. Equally they disrespect others.
Me? Iā€™ve got no time for mourning the likes of Saville, West or Sutcliffe.

Equally others have no time for mourning other people they have disrespect for.

This is a message board and if someone wants to offer respect (a la Queen, Lawson etc) fine.
Others have the right to say ā€˜nahhh couldn;ā€™t stand the firker alive so Iā€™m cool they are deadā€™.

Each to their own and all that

Personally I never mourn anyone that I didn't know personally, I dont think it would be possible to have that level of sadness.

I agree with the sentiment that we should be respectful to the family and friends of the deceased but I don't believe the relatives of Saville/ the Queeen/ Lawson will ever read this message board.

I don't think its an issue in this instance so who else are we going to offend? Criticising the way someone lived their life on a quiet corner of the Internet is different to slagging off someone at their own funeral.

If you are living your life in the public eye then you are able to create your own legacy, you can choose whether to have a positive impact on the world or not. Many politicians have used politics to further their own career and live a good life at the expense of others, if that's the case then you've got to take that to the grave and I don't see why you deserve respect in death if you didn't deserve it in life.

The thing is, the phrase 'don't speak ill of the dead' is very binary, and doesn't give any wriggle room.

If it was 'don't speak ill of dead folk who have never committed genocide' (as Lawson hasn't) maybe it would hold water, but I'm pretty sure no one will be saying 'come on, common decency lads' on here when Aung San Suu Kyi carks it.

People can 'speak ill' as much as they like about me, when I pop my clogs. I won't give a crap. I'll be dead.

A divisive topic. One I haven't contributed to or seen, until now.

Some people simply weren't around to appreciate the local devastation, brought about by the decisions made by the government in power, that blighted 1980s Teesside - even though it is still evident today. We're still seeing the effects of them now, hence the Leveling Up agenda.

Life expectancy in our area was (and still is) impacted directly by the poverty that resulted from the ensuing mass unemployment. The population stagnated and we suffered a significant brain drain as both desperate and skilled people moved away.

I have sympathy for his family - a lot more than he showed for mine. I have none for him, or Mrs. Thatcher's either. Given the privileged start in life and the wealth of opportunity available to both, it's a shame they didn't do more good, with their lives, and cause less harm.
