Kherson

Something that has gone a little under the radar, Kazakhstan has, as of yesterday I believe, halted arms exports to Russia and is now imposing sanctions on Russia, declaring that it is now looking to trade with more stable partners. This is quite a biggie.
kaz want to run their country how they want, problems will occur as Russia supply Kaz with a lot of water for industry and cities. Russia wan’ts to control Kaz oil.

Kaz have already upset the Russia over WW2 celebrations and one Russian minister has threatened Kaz will be next for invasion.

Tokayev isn’t as close to Putin as Nazarbayev was so definitely some tension, however, various figures in Russia (most notably the recently deceased crank Zhirinovsky, and Putin himself) have been questioning Kazakhstan’s sovereignty for years, the rhetoric is almost identical to what Putin has said about Ukraine (not a real country/no history/only there thanks to Russia/protection of ethnic Russians) minus the Nazi slurs.

No doubt lucky me will be in Kazakhstan if/when it kicks off

I doubt it’ll happen, I don’t think the Russians in the northern regions are agitating in any significant numbers at all (Kazakhstan was more sensible than Ukraine with its attitude towards its Russian population and its culture, language etc), I barely heard any grumbles in my 5 years there. Russia can’t afford another war front either, they’re already struggling in Ukraine and other occupied regions.

Plus, you’d have fair warning as the military movement and troop buildup on a border like the one between Rus/Kaz would be very noticeable.

Plenty of opportunities for a few jars of Karagandinskoye I reckon!

I doubt they made this move without substantial dialogue and deal making with the EU prior to the announcement.
And there is no way Russia can fight on another front at the moment. They're bringing middle aged ex military out of retirement and sending them to defend Crimea.

Interesting article, but bear in mind its author was part of an authoritarian government (Nazarbayev was often called a ‘benign dictator’ which I suppose is true when compared to other dictators in the region like Rahmon, Niyazov, Karimov and Berdymukhamedov) and a lot has happened in the 7 years since it was written.

It is true that Nazarbayev kept all the regional and superpowers close, it was evident when I was there. It was said that he was one of the few leaders Putin respected and his ‘retirement’ and the subsequent unexpected dismantling of his influence and power structures seriously affected VVP and led to him strengthening his own grip on power after there had been previous talk of him stepping down or taking a ceremonial Russian ‘ayatollah’ role.

H
Lukoil confirmed that he "passed away following a severe illness". Presumably this 'severe illness' came on very suddenly about the same time as he hit the pavement.
He was such a jolly fellow… jumped head first out the window so he did… always likes a laugh.

Chair of a company that criticised the dictator sending it's army into Ukraine....what are the chances eh?
In that Guardian article, it says half a dozen businesspeople with ties to the Russian Oil Industry have committed suicide or died due to mysterious circumstances since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. None of the deaths have been classified as murders.

I wonder......

Rumours on twitter of from credible sources that Johnson and MI6 gave the go ahead for British trained Ukrainian commandos to take the nuclear plant that's been in the news the last few weeks but the mission failed and the Russians killed 47 of them and captured 4, 2 of which are intensively wounded. A confession from the captured soldiers could cause a storm apparently.

Don’t know if this happened or not, and am asking this as a genuine question as someone who knows diddly squat about wartime international etiquette…but why would Ukrainian special forces need the ‘go ahead’ from Johnson and MI6?

No idea. I can only think there were British soldiers involved directly? Just relaying what I'd read.
