Just watching Cummings live on TV

Well unless he said something factually incorrect (lied) and there is evidence to prove it he will survive. Not that an un-elected extremist should be running the country. But thats another story

He factually said he spoke to his parents on the property. So can we all go and socially distance talk to elderly parents on their property? When was that allowed?

That was the real point not built on.
We were told not to do that because we might put health services under pressure in an area not our home. He did that.

I guess he’s saying because he is already there then he can talk to them from a safe distance. A bit like talking to your neighbours I guess if you see them whilst in the garden.

Yes without the Barnard castle story then he’s probably home and dry - he better hope that no one has seen him , his car hasn’t been clocked anywhere - although he did offer up for people to check cctv. Let’s see - one slight discrepancy in that story and he’s gone.

The latter is legal. The former exposes the problem. "Property" has a legal connotation - it encompasses all buildings and gardens. He shouldn't have been there in the first place.

Yesterday I predicted he would luckily have just happened to have had a full tank of fuel. He is a well lucky man cos he did. He stated he drove for 30 mins each way at Barny Castle to check if he was ok to drive. Wow, just wow. What if he wasn’t. If he had doubts he should never have been behind a wheel in the first place. He put road users at risk by doing so. Total lie for me.

He played the security card at his Primary address. I am sure there are people who deal with these things for such people. He didn’t arrange anything in advance of his security at Durham after all.

His memory for such an important man was woolly. He could not remember definitely stopping on the way back for sure. His failure and waffle saying that he acted reasonably was a joke. He used his priviliged position to do what he wanted. This son issue is a red herring, a smokescreen, an attempt to pull at the heart strings of mothers everywhere. He admitted childcare was not an issue as it turned out. Driving around in a car is not permitted for others With covid, how can that be a part of self isolation.

All about what ifs, well Dominic we all have what ifs In our lives, but we followed what Ministers told us We had to do. I seem to remember Matt Hancock saying the rules are not optional or something similar.

I thought he was just trying to think what he had said and was getting in a muddle as questions went on. He said all the right words, not necessarily in the right order.

Terrible car crash for me

the big issue was saying he drove to Barnard Castle to test his eyesight (a dodgy thing on its own). This was at a time when all non essential travel was banned. And he did not just drive there and back he took his whole family and got out and went and sat by the river!
 
I thought a couple of days ago that Cummings was on his way out, but having watched his statement and the press inquisition, which I thought was poor, repetitive and ineffective, I believe that he'll survive and his survival is vital to protect BJ in the oncoming Coronavirus and Brexit crises.

Maybe he's only guessing he sat by the river? Who know how bad his eyesight was.

I still reckon driving, whilst having impaired vision, with a 4 year old child in the car is bordering on child abuse.

How did you reach ‘home and dry’ bar Barnard Castle? Not safe in his home so had to run away to Durham - absolute claptrap. Didn’t want to expose friends living in London to deadly virus when I had a perfectly good 17 niece to expose in Durham instead! Like some Morecambe and Wise sketch he and the PM had a conversation about in their beds but can’t remember it? Driving a coach and horses through an exemption written for Domestic Violence victims to justify his trip home to see Mam and Dad. Most of the country with a 4 year old and parents living mikes away could have attempted to do as he did and created a chaotic contamination threat. You can tell when he is lying - it’s when his mouth opens. Barnard Castle is a pimple on top of a pile of puss of lies.
 
In some respects the longer he survives the more political capital Johnson will burn through, which may be a good thing for the opposition.

It will be interesting to see what someone leagally trained makes of this, someone like Starmer, for example.

This saddens me what a miserably undemocratic country we live in. Viktor Orbán and Recep Erdogan will be proud of the way they have achieved autocracy.

I think Fatty is correct on this one. The durham trip is moral, against the rules and horrific (given he had symptoms, and it was travelling from an area with lots of cases to one with few) but can be explained away because the government advise is so woolly. Any good lawyer could twist it.

The Barnie thing though: Day trip for a wife birthday? No, that's massively and unequivocally against the rules as they were. The, frankly ludicrous, "eye test" excuse raises far more questions than it answers. Some totally insane yarn to confuse and disguise a highly illegal trip. Shows how much contempt he has that he thinks we'll buy such a ridiculous statement.
