Just Stop Oil protester punched and kicked

"Oil isn't the problem"
OK . Expand a bit. What is the problem that the UN and the vast amount of academics agree as an existential threat to human kind?

There are so many issues out there that contribute to the climate change issue. Although Oil and Gas is certainly a contributor, getting rid of oil & gas causes more issues than it solves. The O&G industry is one of the best in the world and is forever becoming more efficient. FGRS or Flare Gas Recovery Systems are getting installed or are already in use to bring the emissions and constant flaring down to near zero. Electrification is also happening to reduce or remove the use of fuel gas/diesel required for power generation. Oil has always had a target on its back within the general public and it gets a lot of bad press, usually when prices are going up it gets blamed. Oil & gas is so heavily used in pretty much everything we do and use in daily life, so if we are going to get rid of it. Please tell me what else are we going to be using in its place?

Not sure that just stop oil are demonstrating against existing oil fields. Their primary gripe is more permits being issued by the government when we are supposed to have a commitment to reducing co2 to zero.

Exactly my point though, you can make them net zero? We have the technology and systems available too. It's a different story for aging assets.

"...what else are we going to put in its place"
Good place to start providing serious sustainable answers

Exactly this. It doesn't even matter why you think the climate is changing. We have to be less reliant on fossil fuels, they are finite and expensive. Not to mention that the middle east will constantly be in turmoil whilst we rely on the oil fields there, or at least the yanks do.

The real question that we can't really answer is how much are humans effecting the global climate. If we get to net zero, which we will have to just because of limited resources, how much will it redress the balance? I don't know and t he truth is we don't have historical data going back far enough to answer that question.

nevertheless, continuing as we are is just plain stupid.

Nuclear fusion, I suspect will be the long term answer. It's promised so much for a long long time, but serious money is being invested in it currently.

On a similar subject I did skim read an article about hydrogen in the earths crust. I hope not, that will just start the cycle again.

I imagine renewables will cover pretty much all of the planets demands. Just needs a unified strategy which politicians of course will hate.

Not sure it will ST. The main reason is under developed nations will want to advance rapidly and that means spending money on the current infrastructure, not replacing. Secondly loads of countries will just not sign up to an international agreement, then keep it.

Other countries, such as China, maybe don't have the spare land, though they do have a load of mountains. They have something like 60% undeveloped. This includes farms and non-developed villages. The UK by comparison has about 9% of the land developed, and by extension 91% undeveloped.

One final point nuclear fusion is renewable, albeit has a 12 year half life, however 1 gram of dueterium tritium (spelling may be b***ks) has the same energy as 2.5k gallons of oil. At this point, energy becomes almost free If a country develops the reactors and nationalises the industry.

Ah yes, good old Nuclear Fusion. If only we could harness it properly it would be the answer to all our problems. Although I'm sure plenty of the eco-warriors would find an issue with Nuclear power generation. TerraPower already has already created an up-to-date technology-wise process of using old depleted uranium.

nuclear power in a rapidly heating, changing, more violent world? no, can't forsee any problems there at all.....

Best not bother then?

Honestly that is just lame. Fusion is what powers the Sun. It is about as clean an energy source as you could imagine. But it's those pesky "eco-warriors"...

...or rather you making up stories about what those pesky tree huggers think?

We can't rely on renewables though. There's no way of storing their power & the smooth supply you now experience through the national grid takes a lot of processing & managing. The sheer number of wind turbines and solar panels you would need to supply even the UK would be astronomical. At the moment the bulk load is done by gas turbines and is supplemented with green energy. Then in high demand, even coal comes into play.

Have a watch of Guy Martin's Great British Power trip - you'll learn a lot from such a simple program.
