Just noticed @ChingBoro exists

Chingford is only about 3 or 4 miles from me. Only been there a couple of times, anywhere south of Chigwell is much too London and busy for me 😂
So you are not far from my part of London.

I first lived in South Woodford. Then Plumstead in South East London for a couple of years. Then Chingford, South Woodford again and finally Woodford Green before moving to Spain.

Was a member of Royal Epping Forrest Golf Club (playing at Chingford) when I first started. Then moved to the course in the area where East End gangsters made good lived, Chigwell.

Updated: Also, my first wife was born and brought up in Woodford Bridge.

I may well do!!

Lived in the area for many years, right on the edge of Epping Forest. Doesn't really feel like London but pretty easy to get there if needed which is less and less these days!

Agreed. I lived in North Chingford in the 80s and early 90s. It was probably even more like that in my time there.

I woke up one morning to find a cow staring at me through the living room window. The local farmer(s?) used to let them loose in the streets once a year.

The cows are still about but stick to Chingford Plains and the forest. Never seen them in the streets! I believe there is an electronic 'fence' buried in the forest now which emits something which keeps the cows to the forest and stops them wandering off!

I think that in the 80s there was a local bylaw that they had to be paraded through the streets at least once a year. For the farmers to maintain the rights to drive them through. I did not know about this when I first moved there. I woke up one morning and when I went downstairs and opened the curtains there was a cow in my front garden. Right by the window. Looking at me. I nearly jumped out of my skin.

I live in Loughton, when I first moved down here I lived in a little village just outside Epping, where I lived was A 5 minute walk from the forest which was nice. To be fair Loughton is getting more and more urban and London feeling

Chigwell. I think the show was on tv at the time my 2nd wife and I were playing golf there. Lots of big houses around the golf course. Some of which were supposed to be owned by people from the East End. Plus at least one very well known snooker player I think.

I came down to London and went to Queen Mary College in the late 70s. Part of London university. At the time based in Mile End.

The halls of residence were in South Woodford. I lived there for a year. So I was up and down on the Central Line every weekday. In the 2nd and 3rd years I lived in flats. In South Woodford and Leyton.

From what I have read is the old training ground for Spurs was at Chigwell?

I guess Chingford still has the forest surrounding the golf course.

We are planning to visit a friend who has family still there next year, all being well. There is a hotel not far from the golf course. So we are planning to stay there and have a knock around.

When we were members at Royal Epping Forest we used to have to wear red tops or trousers. To differentiate golfers from people who had the right to walk across the lands. There were lots of people walking dogs on the course. We even saw people having picnics on the course in the summer.

Yes, I think you are right. From time to time some footballers played there.

I was between jobs, waiting for clearance to become a civil servant (Foreign and Commonwealth Office) in the early 2000s. So I was playing a lot of midweek golf at Chigwell for a couple of months. So used to see a footy player or two from time to time.

Not sure if the training ground was still near there then.

I think some had houses near the course.

Updated: or that might have been a West Ham player or two. I cannot remember.

During Covid the golf course became a proper hang out place for people while the golfers were not allowed to use it

......
Looks like the show had a break in 1998. I think that was a little before we joined Chigwell golf club.

I think a few west ham players lived there I'm sure Paulo Di Canio was one. And then there is the famous Turkish Restaurant where all the celebs go. I believe Alan Sugar lives there and his business is based near me not far from the Royal Mint at Debden. My father in law used to drink in a pub in Epping with the fella from Heartbeat(Nick Berry I think his name is).
My only brush with a celebrity is Daniella Westbrook she lived around the corner from me, I watched her card decline in the local shop and then she said "what you looking" to my pregnant Mrs, she is an awful woman(Daniella Westbrook not my Mrs 😂).

Interesting.

I remember someone pointing out Di Canio's house to me when I was playing there.

Also, in the early 2000s there was a top league footballer who used to play Chigwell by himself. I think he somehow made arrangements so that nobody disturbed him at any time he was at the course. Cannot remember his name.

Some lovely houses up at Chigwell. Is the Chigwell golf course the one heading towards Romford and Abridge?
Within about a 10mile radius of here there must be half a dozen golf courses.
I haven't played golf since I was a kid at the small course opposite Stewart's Park(I did have golf lessons at a driving range over Seaton Carew way when I was a kid) and I went over to the driving range at Middlesbrough a few times with my mates in my late teens.

Yes, there are some big houses.

I think it was not far from the M11. Here is some info on Google Maps:

When we were young, late on a summers night, the lady who was to become my first wife and myself got a bit playful on that small course. After it was closed to golfers.
