Just left the Town Hall.

The general waste bins we have are small, I get the need for the council to do fortnightly collections, however this will be an issue for many. We recycle everything we can, but still fill the general waste bin each week as a family of 3.
Family of 3 you will get a new 240 ltr bin.

Why would that be a problem? If there's space in your bin why not let someone else use it? Your rubbish is still being collected.
Because they have obviously decided against paying the extra. Where is if i have paid it, its for my use. Fair enough, if as the Lodger says, you split the £40. If i decided not to pay, I wouldn’t go sneaking my wast in someone elses who has. Maybe its just me but i think its wrong.

*edit answered below, thanks!
There’s 2 adults and 4 kids in my house and we only just fill our normal bin, and most of that it cat litter. We could do with a slightly bigger recycle bin but just take bigger stuff to the tip once every couple of months.

It is but where is the victim?

Your rubbish is still being collected which is what you've paid for. Did you feel for the people without gardens when you were getting your collection subsidised by them?
I get what your saying. But i still dont think its right. But there is no real way of policing it.
I didnt feel for them before, no. The types round my way im subsidising them through my taxes, as most dont work. So id assume they aint paying the full council tax anyway.

Thanks for the update. Couple of questions,
1 - If the existing waste bins are normally full each week when collected now, how are we expected to store/keep the waste for an additional week?
2 - Regarding paying £40 for the green waste bin, is this going to be collected every two weeks as well? If I pay £40 what will stop a neighbour who doesn’t pay putting there bin out? How will the refuse collectors know who has paid and who hasn’t?
Think you should be addressing these questions to the council.

Does the £40 get added to the council tax bill, or do you just pay it online? Im guessing we’ll have a leaflet posted through with details?
Yep, it will be an additional voluntary charge. Details will be sent out soon. All current Green bins will be emptied and collected free. But residents will only get one opportunity to have their old bins emptied and removed, we won't have the ability to empty them once we have got rid of the old waggons that work on them bins.

We have one stinky bin (weekly collection) and two big blue recycling bins. We could easily stretch the stinky bin over two weeks - I think I only had one bag in it today when it was collected. The recycling bins are always full on collection. I have no issue with fortnightly collection nor with charges for green waste, most other authorities have been doing it for years.

Not sure if you're trying to criticise our waste management, but the point being is we generally fill (by fill, I mean still being able to close the lid) our waste bin after one week and so do you, which means we need a bigger bin for two weekly collections to work without having black bag side waste.

Judging by many bins I see that are put out each week with lids that don't close, this will be more of an issue for many, which is why I raised it.

It's reassuring that the council have already considered this impact and are acting on it.

Yes we are amongst the last councils to charge for green waste- Green waste collections are not a statutory duty, the current government doesn't believe that councils should provide duties that aren't statutory.
fortnightly waste collection will help with recycling rates, ours are about 30%, we hope this will increase to more than 35% once fortnightly bins kick in, this will help the council with costs and more importantly the environment.

No wasn’t criticising, just commenting really. Some of our neighbours have bags piled on top of their bins as well as loads of extra bags next to them. Can’t understand how they generate so much waste tbh.

As someone said earlier, you can reduce your waste massively if you have the time and can be ärsed to do so. The bigger bins will be good for fortnightly collections, but those who struggle now will just have double the amount of extra bags etc by the time it comes to be collected.

We have no plans to collect extra bags.. A full education program will be townwide soon.
