Just left the Town Hall.

If the public have picked up the bill then this is a disgrace. The councillors who abused this system should be named and shamed and made to repay these bills. Won’t hold my breath waiting for it to happen
It wasn’t councillors. It was mostly senior council employees working in Children’s Services, who were authorising their own use of corporate credit cards. Looks like it’s been swept under the carpet and we are footing the bill.

Councillors don't have payment cards. never have, never will. Councillors don't get involved in the day to day work of the council. We employ staff to do that.

Nothing was swept under the carpet, we spotted it and reported it, it's why you know about it, you didn't know about it before we took over the council, but I can't talk about what was and wasn't swept under the carpet then, you'd need to ask those that was running the council at that time...

Where I voted in favour of Mayor Cooke's budget.

It's not a budget anyone of us wanted, but we are where we are, it was this budget or effective bankruptcy.

Yes the general waste bins will go fortnightly, yes there will be a £40pa charge for green waste, we'll have to look urgently for a long term solution for Capt Cook Birth Place museum- the stay is for a few months only, but we will continue to provide most of the services that we currently provide, and the lights will stay on.

And Joan the moan McTigue, didn't bother turn up.
Thanks for the update. Live in Redcar but from Boro and its still in my heart. Have a bit of faith in new mayor and he has got to be better than last tosser.

The reality is almost every council area in the country worried about the same thing, but fraud levels are very very low.

Biggest thing it does it increase fly tipping
This was/is my concern, I'm told after a short initial period, research shows there is no evidence that it increases fly tipping.

Or you will put your green bin out, go to work, then your neighbour will top up your bin with his garden waste. I can understand the sticker/chip on bins, but this is going to be abused by those who refuse to pay it.
Or you could have just kept it as it was and spent a million quid on any number of more important things.

Fly tipping of green waste is not the same kind of problem as fly tipping old mattresses or building rubble.

your neighbour will top up your bin with his garden waste
Why would that be a problem? If there's space in your bin why not let someone else use it? Your rubbish is still being collected.

Darlo alternates collections of recyclable materials (glass, plastic, paper, etc.) and household rubbish week on week and green waste is paid for separately and collected bi-weekly but on a different day to other collections. I live in a street with quite large gardens and I would say roughly 1/3 of houses have a paid for green collection. I guess the other households either compost everything or take occasional trips to the tip (free). I trying to compost more this year by composting veg peelings and such. It can be remarkable how little general waste you generate if you try.

Not sure what the million quid is but if it’s the cost of new bins, presumably it’s essentially invest to save or it wouldn’t have got through the budget?

Was there a vote on the council tax increase? The council have applied for a 12% increase, despite a recommendation of 5%, which is bad enough.

The general waste bins we have are small, I get the need for the council to do fortnightly collections, however this will be an issue for many. We recycle everything we can, but still fill the general waste bin each week as a family of 3.

*edit answered below, thanks!

Thanks for the update. Couple of questions,
1 - If the existing waste bins are normally full each week when collected now, how are we expected to store/keep the waste for an additional week?
2 - Regarding paying £40 for the green waste bin, is this going to be collected every two weeks as well? If I pay £40 what will stop a neighbour who doesn’t pay putting there bin out? How will the refuse collectors know who has paid and who hasn’t?
Sorry, missed this.
The old bins are 140ltr, if you have 3 or more in your household you will be issued a new 240 ltr bin.
If you have 2 of less then you will keep your 140ltr bin, but you will have the option to purchase a further 120ltr bin for a one off charge of £40
Yes the new green bin will be emptied fortnightly.

Tough decisions mate, I don't envy the task.

Do the people of Middlesbrough really need new bins? Doesn’t seem like the highest of priorities with everything else going on.

No it’s not the same, still fly tipping all the same.
