Juke Box Musicals

While still waiting for the Doc's verdict on whether or when I can get back to work, I'm of course keeping an eye on what's going on and a jobs a job at the end of the day. Now I have some experience of the Juke Box genre, watching the opening night of We Will Rock You had me musing on whether or not chewing my own arms off might prove a more pleasurable experience than what I was seeing and hearing, that said though I had a genuine tear in my eye on my last show of Sunny Afternoon.

However I just clocked details of an up and coming West End production of "Jagged Little Pill" the Musical! Please God no! I think I'd rather feign death and live in a skip than earn my crust seeing and hearing that every night!

Not really a fan of stage musicals period but the rise in popularity of juke box musicals is particularly depressing. Lazy rehash of old songs usually thrown into a ludicrous plot - its a giant karaoke really albeit the voices are professional. reminds me of k-tel records of the 1970s. .

I quite like the tribute bands. Talent playing The Eagles and Credence Reimagined playing CCR were superb.

Horrific stuff. I'm no fan of musicals either, but my mate's just landed the job of running the Fisherman's Friends show for the Summer on the south west coast and is taking his wife and kids with him. Told him I hate him just a leeetle bit...

No. They're both written as musicals. A jukebox musical is where producers take a collection of a band or songwriter's songs and design a story around them. There have been some good ones. As SWB mentions "Sunny Afternoon" with the songs of The Kinks was very good and I also enjoyed "Our House" with the music of Madness. Most are awful, like the Queen and the Abba ones.

Sound of Music and Grease as I said above are not Jukebox musicals. Examples of Jukebox Musicals are

Mamma Mia
We will Rock You
Jersey Boys

Thank you for explaining.

I should just add, in my own defence, I love Abba and Queen, but both the shows were awful. Even though my very good friend was very successful in one.

When Saturday night Fever came out, I was [and still am] into The Who and Scooters.
At the time I couldnt stand disco and TOTP`.

Funny, I clicked this without reading the thread first and was going to say, they’re almost universally awful but I’ve heard the Alanis Morissette one, Jagged Little Pill is actually really good!
