When wearing the No8 shirt at home to Leyton Orient, he made a sub appearences the previous week away to Charlton

A good attendance that day of 17, 132 for a 2nd division clash

Jonny Vincent played 39 games, plus 4 as sub, scoring 7, one of which was scored direct from a corner at home to Fulham on our 1st game of the new season, he was registered No480 when Stan Andersons made a player exchange with George Smith going to Birmingham as a player swap

In my Boro boot boys post I mentioned a game against Portsmouth in the early 70s. Having looked it up, I know that Johnny Vincent scored that day, so I know that I saw him play live.

Had I not looked it up, however, I would have said that I’ve never heard of him, even though I saw him play! I really don’t remember him, sadly.

I rated him as a hard hitting midfield player which sort of makes it strange that he was in a swap deal with Brum involving George Smith going the other way - because Brum wanted a hard hitting midfield player!

Johnny Vincent was a good player and always gave his all. He was one of those players who would never shirk a tackle and was really hard working midfielder/winger.
I do remember George Smith being bought for a club record fee of £50,000 from Portsmouth. To be honest they were both exactly the same type of player. This is of course from a 16 year olds perspective stood in the Boys End.

Vincent was the first Boro player I saw take long throw-ins. With his accurate crosses he struck up an instant partnership with Hugh McIlmoyle, worth a few extra goals. Shortly afterwards, however, McIlmoyle fell out with the club because he wouldn't relocate to the area and he moved on.

I remember the goal direct from a corner - into the East End Seats I was near him when he took it in SE corner. Willie Maddren seemed to playing up front and he got the other one.

My late dad loved him we argued over him and other players then he reminded teenage me i had never seen Vincent play........... ouch 🤣

Saw his debut At Charlton.
Good Friday Palace away D 0-0
Slept in car overnight
Easter Saturday Charlton
away L 0-2
Promotion over for another year.
Thought Vincent was awful that day. Not a patch on George Smith who we swapped him for.
Gazette’s nickname for Smith was Mr Perpetual Motion
