Jonathan Woodgate

Fair enough. I have never been a big fan of Woodgate myself really. But there is a cohort on here who seem to think our current problems are all down to him, which seems bonkers to me and clearly based on pre-conceived bias.
Yes there is definitely pre-conceived bias........................probably based on his previous managerial efforts at the club. During his tenure he was on the receiving end of totally unacceptable personal abuse and given that I understand why people were pleased to see him achieve some 'partial' rehabilitation last season. But it doesn't alter the fact he was not a good manager and that some of what is going on in terms on managing the team on the pitch has the signs of his cold, dead hand.

I don’t recall any posters suggesting that our current problems are all down to Woodgate.

He didn't do well as manager, of course. But he was part of the 'successes' last season as much as he is part of the failures this. I fail to see how anyone can put this on him anymore than they can Carrick, Danks, Nick Allamby, Scott, Bausor or Gibson.

@Mwelolo there are loads of posters who've said as much these last few days. Search his name. I'm all for criticism when its due but it seems like Woodgate is the preferred option for people who don't want to criticise Gibson and can't quite bring themselves to say they want Carrick out yet, of which there are a fair few. I can't recall a time when changing one of the assistant managers is all a club had to do to get out of stormy waters.

You just know if Carrick is let go then it’s Woodgate who would be given the responsibility to be manager. Ffs
I can just imagine the conversation last October

Gibbo: Me and our Hayden really want you back as Manager Woody, we miss your Etch-A-Sketch presentations and your ability to persuade people that the league is lying, but it may be a bit soon. I’ve been speaking to Neil ‘Baldrick’ Bauser and he has a cunning plan. We appoint some freshman like Carrick, whose bound to fail with this lot I’ll bung ‘big nose’ a few quid to recommend him so it doesn’t look suspicious and I’ll persuade him we have scoured the world for the best number two and the super computer that predicts the league will have gave your name (wink wink).

Woody: That’s brilliant Steve, is it ok if I get off your lap now as I’ve got some curtains i want to set fire with these matches and new £20 notes I found in Scotts locker, I hope your eye gets better soon.

Steve: Talking of matches, after Carrick has lost a few on the bounce, we’ll be in a position to put you back as Head Coach and the fans will be ever so grateful and non the wiser as half are from Stockton and are Mackem lites anyway and you can use the one about the league lying at the 1st presser, the players will love it and start to be class again, we’ve never had the same full time manager twice, we’ll be creating history together again. The fans will finally get the team the town and the Manager it can afford and I know you’ll smash your way out of this league and make us contenders again at the next level.

Won’t matter what manager we have with this squad, signing second class international players is not going to help anyone.

You're a very naughty boy Col.

Were you at the game last night? Did you hear all the 'Yorkshire, Yorkshire' chants from our end.....

I don't see a cohort of posters blaming everything on Woodgate; nothing like.
There are some who believe his appointment was a very poor one obviously influenced by Gibson.

One assistant coach isn't setting strategy, isn't setting budgets, isn't recruiting or selling players or setting squads, isn't picking teams or making key decisions.
It is nonsense to suggest he is the primary reason for our fall off late last season or our malaise this season.

My position has been clear on Woodgate for a long time. I don't need to restate and Finny covers some of it anyway.
I think the club would be better served by Woodgate being replaced with someone more suitable to support Carrick.

But even with my Confirmation Bias re Woodgate (others might try and be honest sometimes) I can't blame Woodgate for where we are now.

Well there are a handful. I bet if I ran a poll on 'who is to blame for our current predicament' with Woody as an option, he'd get at least 10% of the vote.

I too never wanted him as manager, nor would I want him again. I don't disagree that a more experienced assistant may help Carrick, but we've seen with Robbo/Tel that its a hiding to nothing as the fans just see any success as being all down to the hired help. If the current structure isn't working, change it. Personally I'd give it a bit more time and I am genuinely not worried about relegation.

Just trying to lighten the mood with a little jesting 😁

No, wasn’t there last night the telly was my platform. I could hear the boro end in fine voice on occasion, no I never heard those chants funnily enough, the commentators were too busy drowning out the atmosphere with banal musings to hear anything half the time.
