Jonathan Woodgate

I didn’t think it was a failure.. he kept our costs down and brought Djed Spence into the fold.

Oh come on Newy
His job description wasn’t to keep costs down and bring Spence in

His job description was to get us moving in the right direction on the pitch.

He was an abject failure at managing the team.
Couple that with his violent (potentially racist) past makes it even worse that he is protected/defended just because he is from the town.

I’m not defending him for any of those reasons, slagged him off good and proper when he was failing as our manager.

Just think it’s bizarre to put all this on him. There’s at least 6-7 other people who are as much (or more) to blame for what’s going on, before you even consider the playing staff.

Oh I agree - definitely can’t put it all on him. In fact, Gibson, Recruitment team, Carrick, Woodgate (prob in that order)

I'm maybe wrong here, so someone can put me right but I don't think Carrick would of picked Woodgate to be on his coaching team before he was offered the job, surely he would of wanted to bring his own backroom team in unless Gibson has made promises to Woodgate that he will always have some type of role at the club before Carrick arrived. I personally don't think Carrick had any choice in recruiting Woodgate as is the same when it comes to transfers, it's all out of Carricks hands.

The buck stops with the Carrick. If people under him aren't performing he needs to take steps to rectify that. If people above him aren't doing what they are supposed to then he needs to say so and be prepared to walk away. If he is going to say everything is fine then he is accepting responsibility for what is happening on the pitch. Which he should.

Our defence has been shocking since he arrived, we just got away with it at first last season because we were scoring goals. Now we don't have the same threat up front and it's increased the pressure on an already leaky backline. I'd agree it's the midfield that is the problem as they offer no protection and leave us exposed time after time, but that is how he is setting them up to play. The fact that Carrick has failed to address this tactically after nearly a full year is a damning indictment. Inexperienced certainly but he needs to learn fast

There's some concerning echoes from Woodgate's time in charge in the body language and decisions being made at this moment in time. Head coach talking about 'can't fault the effort', strange team selections to execute a plan, and then a reluctance/inability to change it if Plan A is thrown out the window.

Coincidently, it was an early season defeat at Blackburn during Woodgate's season in charge where it looked like we were going to be in for a long struggle.
Surprised by the teamsheet before the match, slow start, went one down early, and never looked like getting back into it, with Woodgate stood on the sidelines, hands in pockets not doing anything.

I think you are wrong. It sounds like Carrick/Woodgate had a relationship before he joined the club and I'd be amazed if he would have agreed to have a coahc he didn't want.
