Jonathan Woodgate

Playing devils advocate, Woody is getting the same treatment dished out to Pulis and monk - and to a lesser extent Karanka. And in certain quarters Warnock is copping it.

No point in continually looking backwards it won’t change a thing.
I wish Woody well, it appears many others don’t share those sentiments.

Woody had us playing good football at times and has had some bad luck with stupid sendings off(I'm thinking especially Johnson against Hull)but still can't believe that team he picked against Swansea

No he didn't. He really didn't.
There was only one place we were heading with him in charge and that was a local derby with Sunderland.

YOU get loads of unwarranted abuse?:ROFLMAO:

It was about winning the play offs, not a play off finish.
He started 6th, ended 6th and threw away a two goal lead when it mattered.
And you are uncomfortable with this thread?
This thread is absolutely lightweight and as usual you fanny around with concern in the wrong areas.
Woodgate was a terrible appointment here, he did really badly here.
He was lucky to get the Bournemouth opportunity and predictably hasn't taken it.
Only an idiot would want him back at our club.
I have personally experienced him and have watched and listened to all his interviews.
If that doesn't give me and people like me license to voice an opinion on a site like this then ban me Rob, it is not a site worth being on.
I wholeheartedly agree with you...
You should be banned 😃

I can’t remember who we were playing, but the first half of the first home game was hugely enjoyable - high pressing and taking the game to the opposition. Think we ended up losing then we seemed to abandon that style and every game after seemed more horrific than the last, save for that purple patch around Christmas.

edit: it was Brentford.

I remember his first game in charge - I think it was 3-3 v Luton. I thought, wow, this is going to be a roller coaster but will be good to watch.

We abandoned the high press at half time in the second game (Brentford at home), that was after the big song and dance we made that summer about changing our style.

Most of games in second half of this season have been almost as bad as last. You are fooling yourself if you think different.

Yeah can't argue with that, I suppose the difference is that we've just finished comfortably in mid table whereas Woodgate was taking us to league 1.

I do think different personally. The second half of the season just gone, albeit not very good, was not as bad as the second half of the season prior, where we picked up a grand total of 8 points between FA Cup weekend and Warnock taking over.

We picked up 20 points in the same period in the season just gone.

I think people are already forgetting just how bad 2019/20 was. Covid to blame perhaps!

Yeah, I was hoping that performance was going to be indicative of the season. We had all pretty much accepted we weren't going to be pushing for promotion, but the thought of sacrificing that to see us playing high-pressing attacking football, with a few youngsters in the side seemed a decent consolation prize at the time.

First half against Brentford was promising. I seem to remember Clayton seemed to have been instructed to press higher up the pitch and we knicked the ball in some dangerous areas a few times. I again remember being encouraged by what I saw.

Fair enough, we went on to lose the game but against a good Brentford side. It was totally senseless to seemingly completely abandon our style after that one defeat.

Agree on the points taken/lost but I was more on about the quality of football. I said a couple of weeks ago 3-3 at Luton away was probably the last truly exciting game. But it is what it is we get on with what we have.

Well it was exciting in terms of both teams scoring plenty of goals. I preferred our 4-1 demolition of Birmingham though or 3-0 v Millwall, even just from a footballing perspective. There was nothing at all like that under Woody. In fact after that Luton thriller we never scored 3 goals again under him, conceded 3 plenty though.

The best we played under Woody was undoubtedly Preston away for me. He even got a tune out of Gestede that day, but Ayalas injury took the wheels off the mini upturn and I don’t recall us winning till just before lockdown at Charlton. We were poor and heading for the trapdoor imho.

A quote from Jonathan Woodgate, a ‘red’ when asked whose results he looked out for——-"Leeds United, Leeds reserves, Leeds youth team, Leeds Permanent Building Society pub team, Leeds and Holbeck pub team, Leeds ice-hockey team, East Leeds chess under-19s, South Leeds over-19s poker team, anyone with Leeds in their name. And Middlesbrough."

Very good player, nothing against him but this sticks in my mind.

As a Boro fan, I wouldn’t play for Leeds Utd for a million pound a fookin week!

Course you wouldn’t
