John Noakes scary stuff

It’s an amazing fact, that the Sydney Harbour Bridge, built 100 years ago (give or take) took 8 years to build, contains 60000000 rivets. Each riveter had A catcher, catching semi-molten rivets in an asbestos glove, thrown from a mini-furnace from yards away. There was only one fatality during the whole process, and that was a novice employed by one of the foundries at the base of the bridge. No harnesses, and not one person fell from the bridge. DormanLong, of course, was the builder

That other Blue Peter fella did a similar thing on top of Big Ben.

Thinking about it, my FIL was also on Blue Peter doing a similar thing (although not sure which presenter). My wife only knew this because they watched an episode of BP in school one day and her dad was on it. When she got home he gave her the BP badge he'd got when he did it as he'd just shot it in a drawer.

My father in law was a steeplejack (although he hated DIbnah for some reason) and he'd regularly climb chimney stacks / cooling towers etc either without a safety harness, or with it unfastened to make the job easier / faster.

He's in his 80's now and will happily climb a roof in a pair of deck shoes to mend someones chimney stack or tv ariel
Ended up having a long night on the pi55 with Dibnah, looking back it was probably around the time he found out he had cancer, though he never mentioned it. Came across as a decent guy and was a good laugh, session went on until about 4 am. He never mentioned domestic violence and no one thought to ask! I realise that doesn’t mean it didn’t (or did) happen.

When he got to the top there was a Big Issue seller waiting for him. I always admired John Noakes. Not only did he have balls of steel, as seen in this clip, he was also a decent bloke. He was an entertainer yet to be equalled in my opinion. He did whatever was asked of him and always had a good rapport with the guests and viewers. Few TV 'personalities' would go where he ventured now.
