Jeremy Vine tweet tonight (cycling related)

You can't compare knock and run with what he's been doing. When we were kids he would have been given a good hiding for that. Doesn't happen (nor should it) today.

They're both in the wrong.

But cyclists with no lights on and wearing dark clothing are incredibly difficult to see sometimes, how on earth are you supposed to see someone in the dark on a poorly lit road when it’s raining onto your windscreen for example.
Why are you making stuff up? The cyclist is clearly visible, their white shoes & rear tyre are illuminated by the lights of the car behind.
If the driver hadn't have seen them, they would've stopped after the collistion not driven off and tried to make good their escape.

The clip shows a driver doing an illegal manoeuvre and almost killing someone. That is a fact. Context may provide some mitigation, but the clip is damning.

And as I said, this cuts both ways. There may be an equally 'valid' reason for the cyclist to have been riding in the way that he has done. You're ignoring that, as for some reason you want to side with the person who almost killed someone.
I’d love to see his defence for doing stunts in the middle of an open highway then 😂

He may not be clearly visible from a car drivers viewpoint - whatever he’s still breaking the law by have no lights illuminated on his bike, or are you going to deny the law as well

Some weird comments on this thread trying to excuse the driver. He was driving dangerously, at best.

The cyclist is guilty of contributory negligence. 2 crimes one much more serious than the other. In fact in London instead of handing out 50 pound fines for no lights, lights are being handed out.

Dangerous driving carries a maximum of 2 years in jail and an unlimited fine.

Really not much of a discussion to be had when apportioning blame.

Its as daft as yours, he's doing semaphore to point out that the driver behind him is a maniac.(THIS IS CLEARLY A JOKE BTW)

What's your defence that the driver behind can't see a cyclist who is clearly visible?

No, I don't. And neither do you. But based on the evidence available, the driver was out of control.

I could just as easily say something as facile about the cyclist, who was engaged in some elaborate semaphore to signal to cars ahead of the psychopath behind him.

I won't though, as it's stupid and makes my argument look desperate.

It's above Corcaigh. It's stupid and spurious and facile - just like arguing there's any legitimate reason for driving a car through the back of a cyclist.

Shocking video, lad needs a bloody good talking as to he is one lucky fella not to be dead, yes he was acting like a fool. Driver appears to be out of control of his vehicle or senses. Other road users may help determine wether it was a case of road rage or not.
Every day I witness bad driving, and wonder how the hell these people have passed a driving test. And there are times I know I could have been a better driver too, as I have attended a speed awareness course. None of us are perfect and maybe we need to think about refresher tests for drivers with passing and failing at the end.
I cannot understand why with the move to encouraging people to use bikes, narrowing roads, cycle paths etc to accomodate cyclists there isn't a national cycle test required, it's beyond me.

A friend of mine killed someone accidently.
The person had decided to commit suicide by lieing down behind a speed bump.
A grim story but the point is my friend was arrested and charged with culpable homicide.
There was no suggestion that he did it on purpose but he was held responsible for not being aware of a 'hazard' in the road. Even though the guy was lieing down in the dark, wearing black and partially hidden.
The charge was later reduced. No prison sentence but a fine and a two year ban.

What would it solve apart from adding cost & expense to people's lives?
As road users they would be better aware of how to behave for a start. Sometimes it's small things at very low cost which produces the most benefit. They used to do cycling proficiency tests in schools when I was a lad, and perhaps if the clown in the video had done one he would have thought twice about endagering his own life the way he was.

My god that is grim. Really grim.

Some schools are still doing them. I see kids not far from here out on their lessons.

Do you really think that he was doing this because of not doing a cycling proficiency course?

The only person endangering his life was the driver.
