Jeremy Vine tweet tonight (cycling related)

As road users they would be better aware of how to behave for a start. Sometimes it's small things at very low cost which produces the most benefit. They used to do cycling proficiency tests in schools when I was a lad, and perhaps if the clown in the video had done one he would have thought twice about endagering his own life the way he was.
It's called 'Bikeability' now.
Though I don't think he was clowning about because of a lack of proficiency so I'm not sure it would have made a difference.

Do you really think that he was doing this because of not doing a cycling proficiency course?

The only person endangering his life was the driver.
I have no idea what the lad was thinking, he clearly has no idea of hazard perception. It's about this, and being aware of other road user and understanding that roads are dangerous places. Don't try and make out it is just the drivers fault, the lad is not blameless.

It literally is just the driver's fault though.

The driver chose to plow their car through the lad on the bike.

I am thoroughly shocked by the way some nut cases on here seem to think the cyclist was asking for it or deserved it. You should not be driving if you think like this.

They had enough time/visibility to beep their horn....

Sadly not enough patience/skill to get around the little twerp.

Needs a ban in the same way you would get one (or more) for knocking over a drunk pedestrian who is veering down a country lane in the dark

And you shouldn't be cycling if you think the lad's behaviour was ok.

Most agree that the driver was in the wrong but too many are making out that the cyclist shares no part of the blame, despite has lack of lights and easy to spot clothing.

You're also all assuming that the light you get from the camera shot is the same as the light the driver would have had, it isn't.

even with the assumption, the driver knew the lad was there. The driver thought he could get past and the bike swerved a bit.

The amount he swerved was less than 1m. Therefore the driver hadn't given enough room.

both driver and cyclist were impetuous. Sadly the driver was impatient at best and an utter tool at worst.

I haven't sided with either party involved and suggested in my first post that neither are blameless. I also suggested(by implication) that better road awareness through training and re-testing may reduce these sort of situations arising. I think some of the blame should be directed at the nutcases who allow untrained people to ride on the roads.

Of course the cyclist has to accept a big chunk of the blame. But the car driver shouldn't have hit him. The cyclist's idiocy doesn't excuse that.

If he didn't see the cyclist, then that's a problem. He should have seen him before he hit him.

If he did see him, that's a bigger problem. He either hit him deliberately or tried to overtake him and misjudged it. Or tried to give him a fright but didn't stop in time.

Actually, if you take the 'cupid stunt cyclist' out of the equation, then it was pretty poor driving anyway. The road was narrowing and he was heading pretty close to the lane of oncoming traffic.

Haven't seen the video (I refuse so login to the cess pit that is Twitter) but it seems to be the perfect example of two idiots meeting. Cyclist thinks that the driver won't be stupid enough to try to get past him, driver thinks that the cyclist won't be stupid enough to ignore him. A lesson for idiots everywhere?
