Ahh, the old 'you've lost your accent so you're a sell out' call.
After 30-odd (and some not so odd) years living in another English speaking country my accent has definitely changed.
I remember my mam saying I talked posh now.
But, we (Teessiders) talk quite fast and I found it hard for some people to understand me fully unless I slowed down.
AND when you slow down you pronounce your words better and to some it sounds like you are talking posh (or the Queen's English).
Remember we all learn the Queen's English at school, but our regional accents distort it.

Yeah the Smithy accent was never his real accent.

Fair enough, I always thought he was from Essex thats why his posh accent sounded funny.

His current accent is a million miles away from his real accent and couldn't possibly have been formed after a few years working in the US.
He's putting it on.

I remember hearing the actor who plays Frank Gallagher in Shameless (David Threlfall) speak on a chat show. I was stunned he was posh and a bit of a thespian 
My missus was watching some dog grooming guff the other week with Sheridan Smith presenting. I didn't recognise her (new teeth etc) and her accent was completely different. I guess I always remember her playing chavy characters.

Tim Spall is a wonderful actor. I've never seen him give a bad performance.

The guy who plays Endeavour. When you hear him soeak he has the broadest scouse accent.

People’s accents change. Sometimes part of it is conscious I guess.

Plus working on prime time US TV he'll have had some level of voice coaching to make sure he can be understood across the US from San Diego to Saratoga Springs.

This is the USA.... They had to have subtitles for lock stock and Snatch.
It's not like he can present the show as Smithy

You see, this is what I don't understand - what are you basing that on - think it says more about you than him tbh
,,,, and I can tell you from personal experience, he's a really nice bloke in real life

I can also tell from my own personal experience of meeting him and watching him work, live, that I thought he was a Cheb end.
Think that says more about you than me to be honest.
