Jacob Greaves

The LCB is very different to the CB in our formation. Fry might be an 8/10 player at CB but only 4/10 at LCB. If Greaves is a 7/10 LCB then that is better.

There was a similar conversation on the Ben Gibson thread yesterday. He is left footed but is equally unsuitable to play the LCB in Wilder's formation. The LCB is more of an LB than a CB and traditional CBs like Fry aren't suited to play there. We expect them to do a lot of build-up play, often in the opposition box.

Most defenders aren't suited to that, they've grown up barely crossing the halfway line and playing short passes out wide or to midfielders to play the football.

Why adopt a formation that you can't find players for? Or if found, you pay a premium as it's only 1 person in 10.

Didn't this site say Nyambe was a done deal....

Rumours were that Nyambe's agent priced him out of a proper move.

Started to demanded too much and interested teams changed their mind about him, tried to go back to Blackburn and accept their initial extension offer but they felt jilted, so he signed a 1 year deal at Wigan in a bit of a panic.

You don't pay a premium for left footed players, you just have a smaller talent pool to choose from. Doesn't matter if you play overlapping centre backs or a basic 4-4-2, left footed players on the left just make sense.

It's like when GS played Trippier at left wing back for England, it just doesn't work

Because it's a formation that works. We could go back to Warnock or Pulis' formations where the key requirement was be massive and we could find players easily. We won't win much though and we definitely won't get promoted. It'll also be awful to watch.

You can buy all those players from League 1 so they will be cheap at least

I'd go for him.....

Fry is a 2 out of 10 at LCB, he's a prime example of someone being one footed, left foot for standing only

I'm happy with the path we are on, I'm happy for this to become the thread running through the club and the DNA of the club. I'm comfortable that it might take several years to get that established, we might sneak promotion this season with some glaring holes in our squad, but will be in a better place for it long term. We are currently suffering from years of poor recruitment that means we don't have a squad where we lose a player and an existing one can step up, which means we are expecting to buy the finished article, which of course is expensive. Hopefully we will drop out of that cycle over the next couple of years.

I think it’s always hardest to buy from a team in the same division esp the championship as you can’t really offer them anything that they don’t already have at least in the short term.

So it’s a hard sell

I see the same Dale Fry who shackled Ronaldo and Harry Kane and has played for England at all junior levels is now thought of as being sh it again by Boro fans because he didn't start our first game.

I like Lenihan and think he's a good signing but he's not better than Dale fry other than his leadership capabilities. There was no mention of his 2 near costly mistakes on Saturday as it doesn't suit people's narrative regarding home grown players.

Where has anyone said that Fry is ****?

Fry did not play on the left against Ronaldo or Kane, he played in the centre.

He's a great Championship centre back in the centre, he was really poor on the left.

My concern with this is that if we spend £5M on a LCB is there enough money left to get the right signings to fill the priority issues of major gaps in midfield and up front. We already have options to cover positions in defence all be it nobody who is naturally left sided but are way short further up the pitch.

2 out of 10 is a bit on the harsh side! But yeah surprising for someone who's actually technically pretty good otherwise is so poor with their left foot. Including at times trying to clear/or block stuff with the outside of his right foot rather than use his left.

The Watford chairmen says any interest their wanted him was made up so we seem to be the only ones that want him right now . If we had two decent strikers in then went in for him the lad may well take one look at us and think were good enough to go up and push for a live , rather than have to through money at hull first

I can’t see us paying more than 2.5M upfront maybe rising with clauses. It would be too much of our budget. Whether Hull would accept this, I’m not so sure. If he does sign, then one or both of Fry and McNair would probably be available for transfer. Out of the two, I would keep McNair.
This site isn’t the most reliable, so hard to tell how much truth there is in the story.

no narrative here, I called out that Lenihan was culpable for their goal. He obviously got outmuscled by Dike too near the end, but I'll forgive him in that most players would and he would have been exhausted first game of the season at that point

A golden thread?
