Ivan Toney

The reason that football authorities now take this so seriously is the match-fixing scandal in the 60’s where 10 players over the top four divisions were jailed for throwing matches for betting syndicates. This included 3 internationals who played for Sheffield Wednesday (Layne, Swan and Kay) who agreed to throw their game against Ipswich. Ipswich won 2-0 and ironically Swan was the Man of the Match!
They were banned from football for life, but later changed to 7 years.

Imagine if cloughs teammates hadn't been throwing matches, he might have never left and ended up managing us to European glory. 😳 🤣

watched a premier league doc a couple of days ago about the first few seasons and Gillespie was on tlking about how he bet on a score he was playing in .... after the score was reached in his favour he passed the ball back all the time ... however someone scored and fkd his bet up ... lost 52K

Wow, I didn't know that.

I knew they couldn't bet on their own games (fair enough obviously), but not being able to bet on others seems a bit daft, as long as they're not in some kind of syndicate with others etc. Although I suppose it's done to discourage that.

Don't see why they can bet on other sports and not football mind, it's not like players don't know other sportsmen.
Well they could know other sports people, but lots of people do. Dont think its at all comparable to them betting on football though. It's there to stop corruption ultimately, and it makes sense.

I used to work in a betting shop and often took bets from coaches and players. To be honest I don't ever remember being told/advised not to.
Well it's their job not to do it, not your job to stop them

Just realised I'm responding to stuff from ages ago...

232 breaches. Clearly Southgate had an idea this was coming!

Is this a Brentford forum or boro?
