I initially thought this was to do with fat ladies going to matches in pairs feeling insulted but apparently it’s to do with anti-semiticism.

H is the eighth letter of the alphabet so 88 refers to H.H (Heil Hitler).

Same reason Combat 18 are called Combat 18 (A, H are the 1st and 8th letters of the alphabet, hence Hitler's initials).

oh yeah - I knew about the symbolism in numbers (Hells Angels - 81 etc) but not the number 88 on the back of football shirts

in the 90's a heavily tattood lad with a lot of Nazi stuff turned up to an exercise class I used to attend.
