is paint essential

There is a store called The Range where I live that sells a lot of paint and is open, B&M also sells paint. I see both arguments with DIY materials. We don't need most DIY materials to live, but realistically your average person is struggling to stay at home and watch TV or surf the web etc for 3 weeks and likely more.

Ref: Mental Health - for SOME people this is a bigger issue in their lives than physical health - I had a brave grandfather who fought for 8 years in WW1 and WW2, badly wounded twice, recovered in a trench from Spanish Flu, saved hundreds of fellow troops, but took his own life years later.
I read about police giving fines to people coming out of B+M on portrack Lane because they were buying none essentials like paint. I think they are targeting the wrong people if true.

Target the shops if they really think people shouldn't be buying those products.
Exactly. I've just called in Wilkos on way to do shop and everyone was just buying 2-3 things. Mainly gardening stuff. So I guess a lot of people (me included) are still guilty of not obeying the rules completely.

This is the grey area I mentioned earlier, if shops are open and selling things it’s encouraging people to buy them and I’m certain some of those people will have made a specific non-essential journey to do so, perhaps non food shops that are open to sell specific things should only be allowed to sell the items that are deemed as essential, to try and reduce the footfall and potential spread of the virus.

Clarity can save lives, confusion can cost them.

The advice from government has been really clear to those with shops - if you normally stock it you can sell

I've had all sorts of comments from customers as to what may be 'non essential' - lottery, cigs, wine, beer, sweets, crisps, snacks, newspapers, magazines, cards.

Had to go to range yesterday to get dog food. Waited 45 minutes to get in. People coming out with garden furniture and bbq, one couple came out with a mirror and some artificial flowers.

I can’t imagine a time in my life where painting would be either essential or desirable, absolutely detest it and I take my hat off to those who do it for a living.
DIY = Don’t Involve Yourself 😊👍

I've been made to by the Mrs. It's so unfair. I've had to cut my movies per day from 10 to 9 now.

Interesting point about alcohol is it really necessary particularly given the rise in domestic violence in the home since lock down. Far more sinister than chocolate eggs

Again, this is where Johnson and his chums are scared to be perceived to be imposing anything, and are relying on people to interpret what their "advice" means. This results in the situations described above where nobody knows the rules ..... because there are no "rules".

In Spain (not saying it's right or wrong, just giving the example - did you know I lived in Spain ;)) ONLY Supermarkets and Pharmacies are allowed to be open - not DIY stores large or small, not builder's merchants, not "leisure" stores, not take-aways, etc etc) and everybody knows that, so there's clarity.

I'm in the middle of a flat renovation so do need decorating supplies - basically bought a wreck and doing every room from the floorboards up. I had a cooker connected on the day lockdown was announced but still don't have a fridge, have done no work inside since and headed back to stay with the family the past week and a bit. I've some broadcasting freelance work booked this week (usually work on live sport so need as much work as I can get as most of my work has been cancelled over the summer now) so when I'm back in the London flat it would be good to keep myself occuppied and do some painting/filling/decorating. I think for mental stability at present it's good to keep busy, I always like the feeling of a job well done and accomplishing something, I can't just sit infront of a screen all day.

Not necessarily across the whole of Spain Have a look at the list I published earlier from the Costa Blanca. It looks like there is some regional discretion going on. So it is not 100% consistent here.

The consistency is that with those regional variances, which aren't massive anyway, the people in those regions know what the rules are
