Is it time to scrap the league cup

Wouldn’t scrap it given our history with the competition.

I can’t help thinking the timing of the first and second rounds is part of the problem - you could argue against lower league opposition it’s just a glorified pre season friendly.

Even an opportunity to blood new players, get others up to match fitness, it serves a purpose. I think it’s more than that for the reasons above but definitely not for scrapping.

Maybe with teams below the prem having to cut so many players its having an effect we couldnt afford to risk so many players second game in the season with such a small squad.

I imagine alot of others are the same so giving kids a chance and looking at the league as a priority.

A little cup run would bring in desperately needed revenue to the club.

But Warnock did not play a strong enough team so out we go.

Money lost.

Definitely keep it for me.
Generates an opportunity for smaller clubs to have a run and possibly earn enough to keep the wolves from the door for another year.
Plus, reserve sides or not, you can’t tell me people would be absolutely buzzing if we got to a league cup semi final again.
And let’s face it, if we took it more seriously it’s the best chance we’ve got of getting to a cup final again.

No way. We should be taking it seriously. Maybe dont start the competition so early in the season so clubs can get their ducks in a row. Far too much going on in August. League cup is a great competition and dissapointed our current and most of our recent managers havent attempted to compete

Would be very sad to lose it for sport & glory reasons.

I do understand why, but also can't for the life of me understand why any manager of a team in the top 30 would play a weakened team in any cup. Winning trophies is what it's all about.

Do you sit at home going "Gettin, I love those memories of us finishing 10th in the Premier League" or do you watch Carling Cup final highlights? I know which one I count as the best day of my life as a supporter. I wouldn't trade Basel, Steaua, Roma and Eindhoven for any 7th place finish in the Premier League.

I get it, being relegated from the PL or not promoted from the Champo is disastrous and the rewards are bigger in the CL. Managers use it to keep unused players happy. But come on, cup runs build excitement with fans, team spirit with players, six extra games aren't going to kill a professional footballer, and the league - unless you win it - is a slog and boring compared to knockout football.

Especially for clubs in the West Ham, Everton, Southampton, Newcastle bracket, it's crazy that they don't go all out to win this.

No, I wouldn't. Just accept that with big squads and no meaningful reserve football managers will use it as an opportunity to test fringe players and youngsters in a competitive environment. I would like to see it more like the Scottish version which is an early season competition and is complete before Christmas. Then we would have league cup before Christmas and FA Cup post Christmas for the top two divisions. I also don't see why clubs in Europe get a bye when they wouldn't be playing many of their first team players in the early rounds, in fact didn't Liverpool play a League Cup tie when at the World Club thing a couple of years ago. If there's too much football kill off international friendlies or Sunderland's pizza box trophy!

Wouldn't it be a better idea to reduce the number of teams in the championship and other leagues for that matter so less games thus freeing up spare weeks for the cup competitions then we could all take them seriously and stop treating supporters like mugs.

Its nonsense to accuse Managers of not caring and deliberately chucking games.
In the big picture - all clubs put out their second team - more so since big money began to rule the game over 20 years ago. That`s not a coincidence.

Definitely no to scrapping it.

I would make it a "British" competition with Scottish clubs joining. (And may be Irish and Welsh leagues too?)

Rangers away at Plymouth or Boro at Shamrock Rovers. Perhaps exclude any teams playing in UEFA competitions?

This question always gets asked when we lose in the first round!

How ever absolutely get rid of it, and the Charity Shield and meaningless International friendlies.

No, don’t scrap. Just because we can’t be ar&&d with it and turn out a team not capable of competing should not have any bearing on a competition we all have fond memories of.

We should have put a strong team out - early season opportunity for the team to gel. IMO... Quoting the BBC report "Boro could not muster an attempt on target throughout and registered only three efforts in total, while the hosts could have reached double figures, such was their dominance." - if I'd been one of the 2,000 I'd be very p155ed-off

No. It should be prioritized ahead of league placing. We are a nothing club without the cups. Surprised people are so easily sucked in by league position is everything given our history, but then lots of fans don't have a great deal of perspective. If we get to the final can I have your ticket?

Exactly what I'd suggest too.
