Is it time to scrap the league cup

I hate even suggesting this after our say in Cardiff but once again we saw tonight no one cares about it anymore. It’s now just seen as hindrance or headache by almost every side that plays in it. Even Hartlepool who haven’t even been in the thing still put out a scratch squad.

so what’s the point.

It gives the smaller clubs a chance to play top opposition if they progress. (A win tonight and we would have had a Tees Wear derby). It is still a route into Europe. just because our manager doesn’t care some clubs still clearly do. A resounding no to scrapping it.
But they seem to care either that’s the point

smaller clubs v top opposition - is a myth as its just now their reserves v Southampton’s reserves.

I don't think I would miss it if it was scrapped, but I don't think you can say no one cares about it anymore, especially when you look at the clubs who getting to the final.

I’d sooner get rid of penalty shoot outs than the league cup. Just a crapshoot. I’d be in favour of reducing the team size for extra time maybe to 7 a side and see if that gives us an outright winner.

I still lean towards no as it's the only major trophy we've ever won, but I am seeing it more and more as a distraction lately.

The fact that most clubs see it the same way doesn't help that.
Even the big clubs that have a real chance of winning it see it as an inconvenience until the final itself.

I think it'll be gone within the next decade, the FA and EFL were happy to scrap it with that Project Big Picture last season and I can't see anything happening this season to change their minds.
We're the only major European league to still have 2 cup competitions and that's despite UEFA constantly pressuring us to scrap this one.
I think the pressure will tell eventually.

No they don’t it’s just their reserves are better than all but about 3 other teams first 11s in the country

This was Man City's team for the 4th round last season.

  • Steffen
  • Walker
  • Fernandinho
  • Laporte
  • Mendy
  • De Bruyne
  • Rodri
  • Palmer
  • Torres
  • Sterling
  • Mahrez

Definitely keep it for me.

Chances for smaller teams to play bigger teams, fair enough it is likely their reserves but for league 1/2 players to test themselves against the odd top prem player or future star etc must be worthwhile.

As above it also gives the smaller teams chance to play at the bigger grounds, even if they’re not full etc.

Also gives teams the chance to give their kids a few games etc.

But the smaller teams still play reserve sides at the so called bigger sides that’s the big difference now.

Yeah it’s a mixture usually though isn’t it, couple first teamers and few kids etc. Also still gives the kids a chance to show what they can do and maybe get a place in the team.

There's 2000 Boro fans in Blackpool tonight who care and went across to support their team.

You followed the game so you obviously care too. Had we won tonight this wouldn't have been suggested.

Northampton and Stevenage fans care having just put one over local rivals and enjoying every moment. It would be very dull indeed without cups in my opinion. Just one long slug fest to survive without glory nights. I envy them.

There's no such thing as a "second string" in football these days, certainly for top clubs. It's a squad game and they're playing 50-60 games per season. A lot of their squad will being playing at least half of those.

A distraction from what? Mid table mediocrity?
