Apologies if this has already been highlighted but a mate of mine who works down on the river told me about a huge increase in ships using the Tees . It’s chemical delivery from big carriers Supplying the pharmaceutical companies with component materials for Covid vaccination purposes .
It reminds me of our huge contribution in the world wars with iron and steel .
So there you go if anyone slags our ( non York ) like appearance , stuff them as we weren’t built to be pretty , but built do a job .

ps it would be interesting if anyone working in this industry could elaborate

I heard its been busier for the last several years on the Tees, which surprised me.

During WW2 - Smiths Dock at South Bank produced a lot of Corvettes type class ship very quickly for the Royal Navy. They were small ships used to attack and deter U Boats, as potrayed iin the film and book - "The Cruel Sea" My great auntie was a foreman/person on the production line at Smith Dock during the War.

ICI Billingham produced aviation fuel and perspex (for cockpits) which was a big help to the RAF.

I was at a talk where I live about a major local munitions factory to me in Herefordshire and it was supplied with its shell casings from a factory in Stockton-on-Tees. Until recent years there was a large Royal Navy missile depot at Eaglescliffe, near Teesside Airport.

There's probably enough material for a book on how the region helped the war effort.

Fuji in Billingham were mentioned months ago, I haven't heard of anyone working on new plant design there, I've spent a bit of time in pharmaceutical plant design, but that doesn't mean it isn't happening.

They sound as if they could be pre-assembled packages, the last plant I worked on in Cork imported them from China, the world's manufacturer.

Here's an article from August CtC, it might be the one you were thinking of.

UK Government to purchase 60 million doses of NVX-CoV2373.
Novavax to partner with FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies to manufacture antigen component of NVX-CoV2373 in UK.
Novavax and UK government to collaborate on Phase 3 clinical trial in U.K commencing in 3rd quarter of this year.
Novavax to make additional capacity available to global markets.

Gaithersburg, MD — August 14, 2020 — Novavax, Inc. (Nasdaq: NVAX), a late stage biotechnology company developing next-generation vaccines for serious infectious diseases, today announced it has signed a Heads of Terms (Term Sheet) with the Government of the United Kingdom (UK) for the purchase of 60 million doses of NVX-CoV2373, Novavax’ COVID-19 vaccine and a Phase 3 clinical trial to assess the efficacy of the vaccine in the UK population. Novavax will also expand its collaboration with FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies, which will manufacture the antigen component of NVX-CoV2373 from its Billingham, Stockton-on-Tees site in the U.K., in addition to its sites in North Carolina and Texas in the United States. The FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies site in the UK will have the capacity to produce about 180 million doses annually, which further boosts the global supply of NVX-CoV2373 for additional markets.

You are right ,Teesside will never be as quaint as York, have a shopping centre like larger cities, be an office/service centre like Newcastle or Leeds. It should stick with what it is good at.... manufacturing, chemicals, shipping etc...all the hard stuff.(y)
