Interesting stat to give another angle on our poor start to the season

As Jimmy Sirrell once said when he was asked if his Notts County side were lucky to win a match when the other team had missed chances

'The best team always wins.
The rest is only gossip'
Words of wisdom from Jimmy 'the tooth' Sirrell. Not really true though is it?

An inspired goalkeeping performance, a dodgy penalty, a blatant offside missed, a goal punched in by the forward. All can lead to the best team on the day not winning.

We've been on both sides of the coin, as has every team I should think. Even Notts County.

We should have scored more and conceded less this time last season too
I think we have a bigger problem with finishing this season. I agree it's similar in that both seasons we created more chances than our opponents and maybe should have gotten better results, but I am more worried this season that this isn't necessarily down to bad luck. We just don't have goal scorers in our team.

Latte Lath’s goal scoring record. We can create big chance after big chance, but until he starts scoring them we’re not going to win games.
Our other options are Rogers with 8 career league goals (2 at championship level), Coburn with 15 (5 at championship level), Silvera (15 career, 0 at championship level), McGree (34 career, 11 championship). Forss and Crooks are the only ones with championship goal scoring experience (31 career, 20 championship and 54 career, 26 championship) and Forss is playing out wide.

The rest of midfield have barely scored a goal in their career Greenwood has 1, Hackney has 4, Howson has 6 in 260 appearances for us, Barlaser has 5 championship goals, Jones has 4, Gilbert has 0, O'Brien has 10.

We scored 84 goals last season. We are really pinning a lot of hopes on a bunch of players that have never scored goals regularly to repeat that. Howson is the only player in the entire squad who has scored as many championship level goals in their entire career as Akpom got last season.

Exactly. Some on the board are adamant that it will all come good, that Lath has been unlucky in front of goal, the new squad needs time to gel etc, all of which may be true. The other truth is that some footballers are just not good enough and can’t deliver what’s needed… if we don’t have goal scorers we don’t win games.

The only player we have who has regularly got goals at this level is Matt Crooks - yet many on here think we shouldn't be playing him!

I would add Forss to that. But yes.
Totally agree. That's why I think Carrick needs to get back to basics and rely on players who know this level and are experienced rather than some of the raw, maybe talented individuals we've brought in. Actually, thinking about it we could be destroying players like Silvera, Rogers, Engel and Lathe by expecting them to go straight into the first team as regulars.

I said on the other thread that if we had last season's forwards we would've beat QPR 4-2.

The performance v QPR wasn't great especially second half but we've created numerous clear cut chances in every game I've seen us play this season (didn't watch cov or second half of west brom). We're blunt up top.

Forss has been the strangest one for me. First choice in that position for most of the time Carrick was in charge. Scored goals. Defended better as the season went on. Then dropped this season to make space for players who don't look ready. Must start in that RF position. Forget Jones for now. He's never been prolific and we need goal scorers in the team

It iis nearly the same as last year, missed chances and poor defending, except I feel we were ahead last year at the same point of where we are now. But I feel we have a crazy potential ( and it is only that until it happens ) to really give a lot of teams a bad beating in some matches. We have a lot of players who need to get used to the system, at the moment they are still developing, which is leading to rushed goal chances and giving the ball away in dangerous positions because our players are not up reading each others movement yet.

Totally agree and likewise with McGree, he has to to start too.

a goal every other game looks good! lol.. keep it up Latte!

1 in 3 looks decent tbh.. Josh Coburn has a decent 1 in 3 record..

Sam Greenwood has a pretty tasty record when playing as a striker.. those stalking runs.. very reminiscent of Patrick Bamford for me. Keep playing him deep when he comes on.. until January when we make a bid for him to sign permanently "just to make up the numbers".. then we unleash him!!!

During the international break Carrick and his coaches need to sit our attackers down in front of a big telly showing Mark Viduka's instructional video, "Scoring in Slow Motion." The fact that I've just made up that video and it doesn't exist shouldn't deter our coaching staff from drawing lessons from the great man's ability to make every goal look like a tap in.

I'm glad that I did realise at the time how brilliant Viduka was.

He'd score plenty where you thought there's not much on here and then bang, goal.

Chuba was like that last season.

I am hoping Latte Lath will get there as i think he could.

I agree Latte Lath has that potential, as finishing is a skill that can be coached. Pace and aggression you either have or you don't, and he has those aplenty.

I’m not so sure I think you can hone it but you either have that instinct or you don’t.
You will always get the 'natural' finishers like Viduka and - forgive me father - Shearer. But there is a lot of improvement that can be coached in. E.g., don't kick ball near man with gloves.

Btw I wasn’t commenting on latte Lath I’m just saying the art of finishing is often overlooked in this country or even looked down on.

Classic example pippo inzaghi often derided in the English media as just a goal scorer ( what else does he do) but his goal records are incredible as no part of his game made him stand out from other players but no one came close to his finishing.

He is the seventh highest scorer in Italy, with 313 goals scored in official matches. He is currently the sixth-highest goal scorer in European club competitions with 70 goals, behind only Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski, Raúl and Karim Benzema. He is also Milan's top international goal scorer in the club's history with 43 goals. He also holds the record for most hat-tricks in Serie A with 10.
