Interesting insight into Lukas Engel

I was recently sat in my regular perch in a sports bar here in Hanoi while watching us grind out a draw against the giants of Cardiff City. As a regular they knock me up the best Parmo they can and put boro on ahead of premier league games much to the frustration of many a tourist.

A West Ham fan was tired of seeing them get tonked by City so he took up a spot next to me and we had a long old chat about how I’d gotten here and how he’d spent his adult life in Denmark of all places. Moved out there on a bit of a whim and ended up living a really interesting life out there. He was a lovely bloke.

Anyway, he has long had a season ticket at Fremad, a team who yo-yo’s a little but is essentially a championship/league one side. Lukas got his move to the top division based on his form for Fremad where they had high hopes for him and thought he had the potential to play at a much higher level.

Interestingly, he often played in midfield for them and even as a ten due to his perceived superior technique for that level and that given space his left foot was deadly at both testing the keeper and picking out others runs. I do think he’s shown vision at times but sometimes naively and seen passes cut out.

He did also mention there was concerns about his mentality and wanted to know if he had any issues with us. He said he wouldn’t go into too much detail and mentioned some potentially influencing factors that are personal and I won’t divulge but that Lukas had some mental struggles/issues which some fans weren’t sympathetic to and it affected his consistency and confidence even at that level. Also shared concerns about whether he had the pace or natural positioning to make it as a pro at our level.

Bit of a mixed bag of opinions but it’s not often we get a first hand opinion of someone who watched him every week from being a young lad. Really well liked there and one of the better players they’ve had over the last decade or so but concerns on mentality and surprise at him having made it this far.

I personally don’t mind Lukas and don’t think he’s any worse than Borges who people want to be better because we’re tired of signing rubbish left backs. I share similar concerns to the fan I spoke to though and it seems to mirror what many of us already have clocked onto.

Yeah, he’s good for a goal or two is Engel, a bit sloppy with his passing on occasions but generally pretty decent and I don’t despair seeing him in the lineup instead of Borges. I’d still prefer Borges, just, before Engel but if Engel ups his game by 10% he’s ahead of Borges for me.

I think Engel comes across as really likeable and I’d love for him to be a success. Ultimately I think when he moves on he’ll be viewed as ok, some good games and some bad ones. He’s playing at a level where he needs to squeeze the maximum out of himself every game to look like he’s of the required standard

I think he is still judged by his first game when he was dropped straight in it with little or no training with the team.. something ridiculous like we only had Coulson and he was injured.

After that he came on leaps and bounds and looked every bit the danish george friend.. multiple man of the match performances he equaled Ryan Giles goal contributions.. although Lukas’ led to a lot more points on the table and his defensive contributions were greater.

Seemed to struggle with an injury at the back end of the season.. one which continued into pre season where it was clear his pace had been impacted.

Looked bright as a button on his return and ahead of Borges.. who may have been suffering from playing too many games at a high intensity.

Engel is class.. canny bloke too. Better left back than the mythological Ryan Giles.

Think the comments in the OP sum him up well. Technically, sound ... definitely above average. No concerns with this side of his game.

Mentally, very fragile unfortunately. You can see when his confidence is there, he's switched on, he's a good player. When his confidence is a bit shaky, he gets rid of the ball asap and defensively he gets caught out of position a few times. Lapses of concentration.

Then when his confidence is shot......ayyaazz. Sheff Wed away last season was an absolute horror show for the lad, a game where everything went wrong and he left the pitch looking shell shocked.

Personally think he did well to bounce back from that. He's come back looking in decent form, really hope it continues and he plays with confidence. I'm certainly rooting for him to do well......but on the flip side wouldn't be surprised to see a LB brought in over the summer.

Puku Cafe and Sports Bar! Are you just visiting or are you here for a little while?

Not sure if the game is being shown at all tonight or id say let’s grab a pint and watch it.
I'm working in SE asia since early November but only got one tour left. . Currently on Phu Quoc but will be back in Hanoi for the Pompey match so maybe pop down then :)

This does not surprise me regarding Engel, watching him closely he has beautiful technique when passing forward into the front man, very accurate and crisp, he gets forward and can knock a good cross in on the odd occasion (wish he would do this more)
The problem Engels has is, he can make a couple of silly errors and this really effects his performance, he then seems to dwell on them, and for the next 10-15 minutes he will make a couple of more, get caught out of position, this lasts until he goes through a period of good play and then his confidence is back and he is back to looking the part again...this is something you see kids do between the ages of 11-18 as they getting to grips with the mental side of the game.

I honestly think there is a really good player in there, but he has to work on the mental side of his game, try not to let the odd bad pass effect him and we need to show this lad support.

Sound mate. Enjoy PQ, it’s been too long since I visited to offer anything meaningful in terms of recommendations sadly!

I’ll be about for the Pompey game though so up for that 👍

I agree with you and it’s similar to what the lad said. Appeared distressed when missing opportunities, clearly a very passionate and introspective character.

I think his lack of pace would always prevent him from going beyond this level or being first choice in a promotion challenging team though sadly.

But to me he seems a bit faster than what you would call medium paced (if that makes sense?). So as long as he gets his positioning right he should be able to get forward and back.
Borges on the other hand is decent on the ball, good at getting his body position right 1 v 1, but is very slow and now teams seem to be targeting him and getting behind him.
Borges very rarely gets forward and I think this is because he can't get back if the other team break on us.

That was a good read. I am out working in Denmark I posted on another thread this week and when the Dane’s ask me who I support they mention the obvious Mikkel Beck but then I’d say half the time they mention Lukas Engel too which takes me by surprise some what and they similar things to original post more of a left winger/midfield but he was doing really well out here and highly respected by all accounts. Just doesn’t seem to have got settled in Championship yet perhaps. UTB
