On a work trip to India on Monday, visiting Hyderabad, Mumbai and Bengaluru.

Not sure what to expect (other than a lot warmer weather than we're currently experiencing in Chicago!).

Any tips for any of those cities from any FMTTMers who have been please?

Expect the experience of a lifetime, be confident and outgoing, treat people with courtesy and they will love you

My best place to visit in the world, been about 5 times, my wife was mangolorian

There is a racecourse within a cheap day taxi hire from Hyderabad,

Mumbai is wonderfully chaotic, your money will get far better value than you are used to, go to the best hotels, I could go on forever

Ignore the bottom jokes mate, the squirts are the squirts you could get them anywhere, just take care with ice or salad which may involve imperfect water, street hot food to die for

Mumbai the further south you are the better. Nice to mooch around the gateway to India and you can get the ferry out to an island I can’t remember the name of.

Have a few beers in Leopolds if you’ve read Shantaram!

I have a business in Bengaluru. Some of the best food I have had anywhere.

Terrible thing to admit but my 2 business partners always pick the restaurants (and pay), so I often don't register the name.

13th Floor

This is fairly central on MG road. Very unfashionable looking buidling (top of the Hancock it isn't). One of the few rooftop restaurants I would recommend as I am not a big fan of the genre. Not especially great views but the food is pretty good, OK bar etc, and cool temperatures at night. Book and insist on a table on the edge with a view. If they put you in the middle, turn around and walk out!

There is one amazing place set in a sort of garden with 3 or 4 open 'rooms' all on the ground floor. My memory tells me that this is nearby the main business parks where the western companies have their BPO bases. So you may be near there anyway. If I can dig out the name, I will post it here.

One thing. I say Bengaluru. None of my Indian colleagues do! They all say Bangalore!

ha ha ... very authentic ...

Byg Brewski

..... but a good place for plates and plates of starter style food and a micro brewery. Don't be put off by the pics and ref to 'western' food. Stick with Indian options .... full of local IT people if I recall (the Wipro campus is nearby). Byg has two locations, both similar ...

The poverty is tough to take. If you’re staying anywhere near The Gate (The Taj is fantastic), you will travel through Asia’s largest slum on the way from the airport. It’s horrific, so be prepared.

Bangalore is where my father in law is buried, my late wife and I found it on our first visit to india early 90’s from scratch an hour after leaving our plush hotel on MG rd, it was like A miracle.

We took our grown up kids there on our last visit, to show them their heritage and pay respects. Mangalorian I meant my wife’s roots belong

I was refused entry to that 13th floor restaurant bar for wearing shorts !

There is a revolving restaurant in the Ambassador hotel Overlooking wankede cricket stadium
