India v England - 3rd Test

I think it wouldn't surprise me if England were 280 all out or 650/6 at close tomorrow.

Need to go past them if we have any chance of winning the test match but it's been a great day today. Some knock from Duckett. Hopefully Root can get back in the runs tomorrow

End of Day 2. Game is evenly balanced. Massive first session tomorrow. If England can get to lunch with 5 or 6 wickets still in hand, they will be in control of the Test.

My main hope for this series wasn't so much that England would win, though obviously that would be fantastic, but that we would play bazball and it would be a ding dong series. Test cricket is the pinnacle but it is struggling for attendance worldwide, unlike ODI or T20. Pakistan fans loved the England series and their team responded to our approach. Many Australian fans have been advocating they take a leaf out of our book. We need Indian fans to do the same and demand exciting test cricket rather than safe, dull, home wins.

So far, so good. Let's hope it is 3-2 either way, but we continue with some special performances and, like today, leave India in shock and bereft of ideas at times.

I think root is just going through a run of poor form with the bat. He's just about young enough to come out the other side and have a good few years left.

Form is temporary, class is permanent after all.

Great cricket but the stadium looks very empty, about 20% of 25,000 full at best. Not sure the Indian public have been weaned off IPL yet.

That’s a big blow for India. Are we letting them bring in a like for like replacement?

BBC says they can use a substitute fielder but thats it - no bowling/batting replacement. I think that can only be done in very limited circumstances.

You can have a substitute in the event of a concussion injury that occurs during play.

That’s how Labuschagne broke onto the scene in 2019. Replaced Smith after Jofra done some damage. He done pretty well for The Aussies in the series after that.

Amazing knock from Duckett today. Hopefully we can make hay tomorrow with a weakened India attack and still a pretty flat deck.

Hopefully Root can get some runs and back into form too. Way too early to be writing off Root. He’s going through a lean patch, but it’s not the first time. He generally finds a way and a method to bounce back. Hopefully tomorrow is the day!

Also how Matt Parkinson didn’t quite break on the scene as Jack Leach’s concussion replacement* in the last ashes but one making his England test career the shortest one ever, as it doesn’t even quite run to one whole match.

* - In pedant mode, in cricket a player who comes in after the start with the full right to bat and bowl is technically a replacement in accordance with Law 1; it’s the one that can only field that is a substitute under Law 24. ICC playing conditions give you an as of right concussion replacement, and used to allow one for Covid as well. You can have one at any time with the other captain’s consent but I don’t think there is any expectation that this would ever be given in a test match.

Though that’s one of the quirks of the “Spirit of Cricket” I think. Family emergency? Letter of the law mate nothing I can do. Non-striker dishonestly trying to steal a start or striker gormlessly going walkabout? Total cad’s trick to apply the letter of the law mate. Withdraw the appeal at once.

Rumour online is that his father has passed away.

Very sad if true, as he dedicated his 500th wicket to him after the match.
