India compared to China

14,000 cases in China was their worst day, and it was one-off because all the days either side they had no more than about 4-5,000 and 150 or so deaths per day.

India - nearly 400,000 cases today. I would guess their death toll could reach 10,000 per day, or more?

Is this really only down to mask-wearing and 'compliance'? Its not as if there's no poverty in China. These are similar sized countries.

China also says they've only had 4,636 deaths during the whole pandemic, despite feeling the need to have military enforced lockdowns across the country, I'd trust their figures about as far as I could throw them, though I doubt the true figure is anywhere near as bad as India's is likely to end up.

Probably true, but what exactly is Xi's strategy with telling the world these figures if they are made up etc? If he's trying to humiliate the west (as well as everyone else), do they anticipate it ending well? India are a nuclear power, I wouldn't want to p1ss them off to be honest.

Maybe the military enforced lock downs are the reason for such low numbers

At the start of the pandemic I read some diaries of folk living in Shanghai (published online as a sort of warning to us for what was about to become reality here).

They were still going out and going to shops etc I'm pretty sure. They weren't literally being chained to their bedrooms.

If China end up with <5,000 deaths and India 5,000,000 there are going to be lots of very valid questions asked.

Australia has in the last couple of days stopped all incoming flights from India leaving about thirty eight thousand
Indian- Australians stranded.

Feel very sorry for them but I think it did need to happen to prevent further outbreaks here.

I think so. If you were Indian you'd be happy to keep away for a bit (if you could afford it etc).

I don't buy it.
They were using the military to lock things down after 571 official cases and 17 official deaths occurring over 2 months in a country of 1.3 billion.

if another variant crops up, we'll probably give it a few weeks before reacting when needed, as we've done thus far, Johnson has to cover his ****. Inexecplicaby damaging and more burden on the science than necessary, but "data not dates" is another Johnson trite soundbite

Lets just all do the right thing here, its all we can do: get your vax, follow guidance. There's no place for being a maverick here. Just my thoughts, I understand others feel differently

Indeed but rising exponentially. Also, there are parts of India (Mumbai for one, plus other large cities) where I think keeping a track on it all will be extremely difficult to make a comparison.

I'm surprised that it's taken so long and does anyone know of the situation in Africa?
Here in Oz we have heard little about their situation.

Appears to be rising a bit, as you'd expect, especially in the North. They have probably barely had their first wave yet.

I don’t believe the China figures.... they were building hospitals from scratch in a matter of days... you don’t do that unless the system is close to breaking

I also don’t believe the current India figures... their official death daily death tolls are far worse

the big thing for me is that India didn’t have much of a first wave... they got off very lightly... so hardly any of the population has built up an immunity. Couple this with a weak health system and poor living conditions for the majority and then add in a new variant and it’s a perfect storm
