In reality - 3 more signings...

Without any further outgoings, and taking into account the lads who have came in so far, I can see 3 more signings coming in (and any more will be opportunities the club cant pass on...)

Left Back - Obviously Bola now sold (and he appeared in over half of our matches last season in one way or another - which I was surprised about), and listening to Carrick after Rotherham, sounds like he has a plan for Coulson. Mention him being more experienced now, but with areas still to work on. So I see Coulson being kept as our back-up/ Bola's place in the squad. Meaning new left back will come in. Relatively experienced and to be first choice - we all know who we want..... Bixente Lizarazu 👀

Central Midfield - I think this one might split opinion. I still think we are short in this area. For me there is only one CDM in the squad, Howson, and he is not going to play all games. We massively missed him last year towards the end, and I think it was evident that at the moment Hackney and Barlaser are not quite balanced together. Payero is an absolute gamble - and if he is still around come Kick off then who knows what he might add to the squad, but for me CM is short and needs a reliable head in there. An 'Mowett' loan type deal for me would be ideal. I thought Mowett was decent enough especially towards the back end of the season, but ideally we get a Mowett Rev 2 - slight upgrade! .... Emmanuel Petit.

Striker - The obvious one along with the LB position. No hiding on this one, and something will have to happen. Cant see Carrick wanting to tackle the first half of the season with Forss (better on the right) or Rogers (not his natural position by all accounts) up top. Gilbert is still an unknown, and could come good fast but we just dont know. Coburn is going to be in and around the team which is great but he cant be asked to be leading the line Saturday/Tuesday each week yet. So something will happen here - it has too! .....Christophe Dugarry

That is the 3 main areas I think we need right now if the squad doesnt change.

I personally would like a new RB but I just cant see the budget stretching for that, and I imagine Carrick will be comfortable enough with Smith who he has backed from the outset.

Centre-back is another area that might need looking at, especially if any of them move on (McNair) but again money wise this wont be top of the list.

Probably worth getting a few more keepers in too.

Personally speaking, I think we need 4 maybe even 5 players dependent on sales

1. Striker, ideally Archer
2. Attacking Midfield, ideally Ramsey
3. Attacking Left Back, Ideally Giles
4. Centre Midfielder (unless Carrick is happy with an u21 player), ideally Doyle (loan)
5. CB (If McNair goes) ideally Tuanzebe (free) or Mengi (Man U loan)

I would agree with all of that (y)

And personally I think we need more than 3, but for some reason I think it will be 3, unless there is outgoings.

Nathan Redmond on a free from under Burnleys nose would be tremendous

Is he available on a free? Not an area we are looking I imagine now, and wages will be outside of our structure I think, but he would be unplayable in the champ. The premier league will snap him up but what a signing that would be.

Thats what I mean by there will be some 'maverick' opportunities outside of the needed positions.

I pretty much agree with everything you've said. I'm becoming a bit concerned that we haven't been linked with any CDMs but in fairness we've gone about our business in a quiet manner so far, and have signed players almost out of the blue.

Hopefully we have some CDM targets and the recruitment team are working hard behind the scenes to bring one of them in.

I don't think we need any more midfielders.

LB is a concern, as is a striker, even if Chuba stays.

Mind you, if we get 5 more in before the season starts, there will be plenty on here saying we desperately need to get 1 or 2 more in on deadline day.

Yeah he's on a free after playing in Turkey,we should have signed him when we got promoted and Norwich went down

I'm not convinced Barlaser can play the CDM role effectively. Sooner rather than later Howson will start to show signs of decline and may become more prone to injuries.

Think we could really do with signing a CDM personally.

Not sure we need another attacking midfielder. Surely getting Silveira, Rogers and Gilbert, 1 of those will replace Ramsay. Right back we are okay Smith and Dijksteel are good enough for the championship. I agree Archer and Giles need replacing with quality if they are not coming back. Howson does need replacing before long but could an academy kid be the answer long term, so maybe another loan as a stand in this season like a Mowatt.

I'm in agreement. I think if we signed Giles & Archer again, along with a CM, then I'd be optimistic for this season again.

I'd love Ramsey back too, but off all the positions, I think his position is the least priority.

Agree with this.

For me we need someone ready to play a full season at a decent level at CDM. Although he is fit as a fiddle at his age we could realistically lose Howson long term at any minute (I know this can be said for all players - but you get what I mean!).

At the moment we have players who can plug the gap when hes missing short term, but no one I would describe as ready to do the job properly for a prolonged spell.

We are lacking the quality imho IF they want to make the autos as stated. Silvera, Gilbert, Rogers all sound promising but promising does not always transmit to consistency and quality, they are somewhat unknown and may or may not cut it. Ramsey is proven as is Archer and Giles, we would be mad not to try for all 3.
