If we can sign Greenwood for £1.5m

Good job I didn't say that then! I was agreeing with you to a large extent that loan players CAN add an extra impetus especially in the January window when good permanent signings are difficult to find. Signing a loan player is however not without risk, perhaps you recall the "performances" of one Kitson, David in a Boro shirt?
No you said of course it is wasted money.
That was literally the start of your post.

I said that the money spent on Archer and Ramsay was "wasted" in that we had nothing to show for it at the end of the season. Then said...
Was it worth the gamble? Yes of course.
It is worth using the loan market but when we do so it is a "gamble". Of course buying "prospects" is also a gamble in that they may turn out to be of little use to us. Take the example of young Hoppe. It looks like he will not be a first team player here so we will lose that money (or most of it if we manage to get some sort of sale out of him, he's "ours" for 4 years) more "wasted money" perhaps? But at the same time we signed Marcus Forss, who looks like he will be at very least a player who is part of the first team squad and will, if we decide to sell him, be worth at least what we paid for him? The rewards are lower than if by bringing in top loan players we get promoted but as we found at the end of last season it does make you over reliant on players who will probably not be available next season. However, we might just find the next breakthrough player and make a tidy profit.

The loan market is very much something that we should look to use but it is also risky and expensive.

I need to see more of him before I form an opinion one way or another. He’s looked decent in fits and starts but a little ‘dormant’ during spells as well. I’d really like to see him step up another gear for a prolonged period. Really grasp that spot whilst McGree is injured.

Scores some rather good goals, lot to learn but get him signed.....assuming he can't play against Leeds?

Would still love to have Riley back fit again, he was in such great form at the time of his injury. Not sure how long it will take him to regain his fitness even after recovering from his foot injury.
But yes how well Sam Greenwood is playing, I suppose he now has a platform to fulfil[l all the early potential of his youth play.

Fabulous goal, excellent performance.
Class act get the lad signed up, been obvious for a while.
McGree won’t get back in in front of him.

Our performance today was so very encouraging.
The match was so entertaining.
Loved it.
I was saying that yesterday, it was pure entertainment. Good atmosphere, two good team and it just felt like a big occasion. To me it felt like a cup game.

I would sign him now, yes.
I think he is going to, and must, improve a lot.
He was poor against Stoke, but much better yesterday.

Better distribution and more composure, would probably turn him into a player couldn’t usually afford to buy.

He's playing an important role already for us, and is more than holding his own in this division and he's only 21 and has played less than 40 first team games across his whole career. He has the potential to get much, much better.
No brainer for me if he has such a low buyout clause.

I think it would be daft to sign him just now. We appear to have a contract with Leeds that includes a right to buy at £1.5M if the reports are accurate. Surely the time to buy is as the season is ending before the contract expires, it will be cheaper I’d have thought and may allow wriggle room toward additional wages in January for an addition. We won’t be paying all his wages currently, we would have to if he signed now. Secondly, we have over half a season to continue to assess him, his progress and his consistency and merit in our style. Thirdly, it is a long old season and it is possible he could pick up a serious injury still in that time.

The sensible thing to do is to keep Greenwood on his toes, show the intent to buy, incentivise the lad to want to join through looking after him and impress his performances need to keep up at the level he is at and allow him to showcase his talent consistently and maybe improve, the purchase of his contract will be the same in May 2024 as it will be now and we will have a whole season to judge on.
