If everyone was fit

Dieng

Smith ( but need an upgrade)
Rav
Lenihan
Engel ( although neither LB is great IMO)

Hackney
Obrien

This front 3 could be changed to suit maybe Crooks in the middle with mcgree going left and chocie of Forss or Jones but think with both these players on either side it would help defensively as teams overload our left hand side because no matter who plays there then do not help the LB out much.

 Forss
Mcgree
Jones

Coburn ( not against Lath though)

Very similar to mine

This would be my team as well, with a new striker priority in January.
Shame we won’t get to see it with the Smith and Lenihan long term injuries. I’d sign a right back and maybe give Clarke a chance to stake a claim as VDB partner. Fry and McNair just can’t be trusted. They have their good games but back up players for me.

For me with a full fit 11 van den berg has to be centre half. I think he is the best we have in that position.

Dieng

Dijksteel
VDB
Lenihan
Engel ( best of a bad bunch )

O'brien
Hackney
Crooks

Jones
Lath or Coburn
Mcgree

I'd like to see Mcgree more central over Crooks and someone else on the left but for the time being, I don't think we have any adequate to play on left. Im not convinced Greenwood offers anything when he isn't scoring.

Seems to be a massive fall off on above posts by the "Barlaser should start before Howson brigade". Can we safely say that ship has sailed.

First game back due to illness since before the play offs, but was really glad to back when I thought it could be the end of the road at one stage.
Been watching from afar though , TV when we were on occasionally, Id rather watch this fellas football since Southgate, its was a joy to watch before I was off, and been fantastic at times this season. Make shift team on Saturday and I've seen this a lot of times.

Current state.
Well due to previous times under Monk, I think we all know where we had dropped a blob , buying some mediocre players that cost daft money u, I don't think we realised how bad a state it left us in. We had to persevere with players that we had to hope would deliver, but never really did. Monk buggered us up and used and abused us looking back.

Current squad ?

1 Dieng very good I think he's as good as if not better than Steffen.

27 Engel needs to gain the experience this season, and perhaps with a regular back 4 he will improve and get where we need him to be.
Smith, I think its the end for him at this level as his contracts done at the end of the season.
Djiksteel Most of the time he's injured or banned, needs replacing for 2024.
Lenihan. I have to be honest I have never really rated him, I hope he gets back to fitness soon though.
Fry I like Dale but he's going stale (poet) perhaps fresh fields and that next season?
Van den Berg Unsure what he will be like at CB, he's not a great at full back to be honest, but he never seemed to have moaned or shirked and just got on with it, which I admire him for.
McNair, I don't mind Paddy at CB, to much for him 2 games at international level after a long run of Championship games, I think he will be off at the end of the season. Good luck to him.
Barlaser. Like him too. can thread a pass and find his man, I would like to see him shoot more when he sees and opening.
Clarke. Looked OK on Saturday, nearly got caught dithering playing football 7 or 8 yards out from his goal line. Has a lot of ground to make up yet but pushed himself and wasn't looking for a rest. like to see him as a regular as he is left footed.
Howson (c) He would only be used as a sub if it wasn't for the injuries. I wont slate him as he has done OK since he arrived.
Hackney I kept looking up at the sky and thought we has this b***r dropped from ? He is fantastic player and still learning too.
McGree Love him, reminds me of David Mills at times, full of running and wanting to be involved. He just needs to get a bit of luck with his fitness. That plantia wotsit, I had it twice and stopped wearing shoes that are to flat and wore shoes with an instep and heel, it worked for me.
Forss Baffled, supposed to be a slight thigh strain been out a good while ? Not bad player and works hard with the occasional goal
Jones Been exciting and great to watch again(at last) gets little sympathy off the useless referees that this division is plagued with. Seems telepathic with Crooks.
Crooks. Been in excellent form and can be sublime, looked a little tired on Saturday, but kept his head up.
Latte Lath I like him, gets up well for a little fella, bit of a David Speedy. I think he will benefit massively from this seasons experience
Coburn. Another young player who once fixed, will gain from his first season leading the front.
Greenwood. Off back to Leeds in June or PL team by all accounts.
Silvera a decent sub.
Rogers needs to make hay while the sun shines atm, I like him as he has some great touches at times and has the brains, he needs experience in this division. Another year on him he might just be a regular. At the moment he reminds me of Garry McDonald/ Ashley Fletcher, it could go either way for him.
Bangura Was a little disappointed with him on Saturday when he came on, as he could went past the FB late on but was maybe under orders to keep shape imho.

I wonder if he will look for January signings?

Be interesting if he gives more time to the young uns the end of some games.

I think this shows the major weaknesses in our squad this year because other than Hackney and Dieng and I don't think we have any guaranteed starters. Some might argue that it's good to have strength in depth and I do agree that we don't have many players that I'm fearful of having to play but I think we've got an entire squad of 6/7 out of 10 players.

Trying to pick a first choice back 4 is very very difficult at the moment and is actually depressing. Every single one of them has question marks over them.

A lot of people putting Lenihan in who was great for the back half of last season but was pretty terrible this season before he got injured. McNair improved us for a few games even though he's not a centre half but then had a couple of stinkers before he got injured. Fry has been anywhere between a 10/10 and a 2/10 all season. VDB has looked the most solid but still young and not seen enough of him at CB to be overly confident. Bangura looks the better of the two LBs but not convinced by him either. Engel is a terrible footballer. Anyway here goes:

Dieng

Smith VDB Lenihan O'Brien

Howson Hackney

Jones Crooks McGree

Coburn

Speaks volumes for the recruitment

Howson (c) He would only be used as a sub if it wasn't for the injuries. I wont slate him as he has done OK since he arrived.
This is incorrect. Barlaser has only been used when Hackney/Howson have been unavailable or lacking fitness. He's been clear 3rd choice behind Howson and Hackney.

Presume O'Brien would be ahead of him when fit.

I suspect that was the plan when we brought him in but he was used covering our incompetent LBs prior to the injury wasn't he.
Howson has played pretty much every game he has been fit.
