Had a worldie in the play offs (if we get there)

So, so tired of seeing people bashing a player that's been a key reason as to why we're third.
People are so quick to jump on his mistakes and never focus on his good.
Could've been worse on Saturday without him..should've maybe got a stronger hand on the second goal but it happens.
People forget his great performances against Sheffield United, Norwich. That unbelievable save from Estupinan at Hull when the tide was turning.

Michael Carrick has repeatedly said, he Is doing what he's being asked to do and mistakes come with the territory. We're very new to this playing out from the back.

For the remaining time he's here can't we just not bash him EVERY SINGLE WEEK.
Steffen had a great day today but he flapped at a corner in the 8th minute that we cleared easily. 2/10.

Dear me

The description of their goal where Steffen palmed it into the path of their striker.. like he just passed it to him and stepped aside. He saved the first shot with a really good save.

Even if he did, the people who complain about him every game wouldn’t be straight on here raving about him. They’d just keep quiet about slagging him off previously.

It’s something that’s already set in when it comes to Steffen, unfortunately.

Really good save? it was as routine as they get and had no pace on it at all.

For a Man City no2 supposedly earning 80 grand a week (with City hopefully contributing a good chunk of that) I expected a lot more I'll be honest. Most games he will gift the opposition a goalscoring opportunity with his poor distribution. He doesn't command his box when crosses come in as well as I thought he would.

I'm not saying he's a terrible keeper and he's obviously a big upgrade on Lumley and Bettinelli but a cardboard cutout would be an upgrade on those two jokers.

He’s costing us huge chances 1/2 times a game. He’s a liability
So does Tommy Smith when he let's fast wingers in behind him? He's Mr Consistant?
So does Ryan Giles when his defensive frailties show?
So does Paddy Mcnair when Dike or any other big striker manhandles him?
Dael Fry vs Carlton Morris? Disasterclass.

These are players who get nowhere near as much stick as Steffen yet have had some grave errors go unpunished because you you know...Steffen bails them out?

Fry bangs the ball off Howson and Nidaye is off and away only to he stopped by Steffen..why does nobody talk about that?

The way I see it, he's 27 which is still young for a keeper. He's been sitting on the bench basically playing Cup games for years, he's suddenly came to a club where let's face it he's not picking out De Bruyne and are adapting to playing out from the back.

I also disagree with you about him not commanding his box. I think he's getting better at it each week. He's actually small for a keeper. Its difficult

I understand that he's important to how we want to play, we can't just drop him for Roberts as he's a totally different goalkeeper.

That however does not make Steffen a good keeper.

The 2nd goal on Saturday, tame effort straight at him that he pushed out to the attacker right in front of him.

QPR last week his positioning was awful for their goal.

Sunderland he didn't even look up and passed the ball straight to Diallo to give him a clear 1v1. He was then slow to respond to the 50/50 that got Dael Fry sent off.

That's all in last month, and there's been plenty of other stuff he's got away with.

Dear me
He has a "loose cannon" vibe about him that i feel like points to either penalty shootout hero or last minute goal going up for a corner

If he was absolutely fantastic at everything let's face it he wouldn't be here playing for the Boro.

As much as there are occasional errors in distribution I wonder how many of our 56 goals this season started with some quick distribution or quick thinking from him and how many goals conceded were actually his fault?

To me he is integral to how we play and how our attacks start. Personally I wouldn't swap him for any other keeper in this league.

It seems the goalkeeper is the only player some people can focus on when we concede a goal, maybe because he's the last line of defence?

Others were more culpable on Saturday, even of you think he could have done better for the second (I'm not convinced he could).

So why is the goalkeeper the focus of the criticism?

I think this is it for me. He's a decent Championship keeper and the stats back that up but I expected more based on his club and reputation. I thought he was going to be the best keeper in the division.

Having said that, his stats (and I think his performances) have improved since Carrick took over so he maybe took a bit of time to settle.

I don't have a problem with his distribution, playing out from the back etc. It's his shot stopping for me, he doesn't save enough or spills some (like on Saturday).

I wouldn't be averse to having him next year but I'd hope we have some other options as well.

He is cut so so much slack by some posters.
Goalkeepers pride themselves on keeping clean sheets.
He has 7 from his 30 matches.
No fewer than 13 keepers have more clean sheets this season in our league, another 2 have the same 7 as him.
Lumley has 6 playing for Reading!
Are his fan club honestly saying that our defence is our problem and he saves us being worse. Utter nonsense.

I'm sure he won't be back next season and we will be better off for it.

He is useless, very poor keeper
