I need a little help seeing the positive.

Currently, I’m not optimistic towards next season. This post got me thinking, are we really moving forward?

We’d just lost at home again, heavily. Plus, we’re going to finish significantly lower in the league than last season. Is that progress?

I keep seeing fans say that the squad is in a better position than it was the season previous, but I don’t see how.

We’re going to lose McNair, Thomas, Greenwood, Ayling* & Howson*.

* We may offer Ayling & Howson contracts, but given the model, they’re both the wrong side of 30 and do not represent resale value. Is that good business sense?

I also think we’ll sell McGree & Forss if they don’t sign extensions, and Hackney, RVDB & LL if the price is right.

Assuming we don’t sell the latter three, our squad would be:

Dieng, Glover

Smith, RVDB, Fry, Clarke, Lenihan, Engel, Bangura

Hackney, Barlaser

Azaz, Jones, Silvera, Gilbert

Latte Lath, Coburn

You could make the argument that Barlaser, Engel & Silvera are not good enough for a side with aspirations of promotion based off their performances this season.

I genuinely think we need major incomings this summer, not just quality but quantity. More so than the season previous.

Help me. Where is your optimism coming from? Because I can’t see it right now.

Last season we had to replace Steffen, Giles, Ramsey, Akpom and Archer from our first team, this season it might be only Ayling and then we would be looking to improve the CDM position and the 10 position but the players there now can do a job.

Last season we knew we were losing all the above as soon as we failed against Cov in the playoffs. This season we are not guaranteed to lose any of our better players.

That is where the confidence must be coming from. It's not necessarily something I share as I do think we may lose at least 2 of our best players in Hackney and mcgree but we shall see.

I wouldn't say I'm hugely optimistic either. As ever with football it's all about finances. Our spend will equate to our performance next season more than likely.

As I said on a different thread providing we don't sell all of our most saleable assets I'd say a spend of 10-15m should as close to guarantee playoffs.

It’s dependent on so many variables too. I think the disappointment of this season after the promise of the last one has just gotten to me.

It’s too hard to call before the summer. I think it’s the sheer amount of work needed that’s rattling me.

We'll look at it like this: at the final whistle last season, we immediately lost 4 starters from our strongest line up as their loans ended.

Our squad will be stronger once the final whistle blows this season than it was once it blew last season.

Loans end at the end of this year too. None of them weaken the team the way the loss of loans did last year. 2 of them have been decent; if we want to keep any of them, we have a much better chance of bringing them back too.

Have to agree with Ayton and MD, I’m not sure there are too many negatives from the last couple of months and we definitely didn’t suffer a heavy defeat last night.

I also wouldn’t say we need ‘major’ incomings either. Another Latte Lath, VDB, and Morgan Rogers would be nice. I don’t think many classed them as major signings last summer?

Exactly. We lost 5 of our best players last summer for a grand total of about £10m income

If we were to lose our best 5 players this summer (which we won’t) it would be for about £60m+

We have the basis of a very strong team. We have a smart, humble and talented manager. We have our "big sale" done already, in January, with Rogers (and getting more for Crooks than we could have dreamed in the summer).

In 2022/23 we loaned our way to the play offs. This year we've done worse, but with our own team - marred by injuries.

This summer we don't have to rebuild a squad after selling our 30 goal striker. We have a similar if not larger budget to fill fewer positions.

Football is so transient who knows what team we'll have , the start of next season. Never mind looking @ the rest of the championship.
Pressure is now on Carrick to deliver next season.
Btw Sheff U looking @ Ayling already.

Pedant's corner: I reckon the 28th match is mathematically the earliest a team can confirm promotion. That's usually at the end of January.

It requires a bizarre combination of results.
We will definitely do it.
