I don't think it's going to happen

I'd fear the worst if we got promoted with this squad of players.

I’ve seen people say this quite a lot, or something along the lines of ‘we’d just get pumped every week’.

Maybe.

But when we came down we’d be in a much healthier position financially (provided we didn’t completely overhaul the team and bring in mercenaries on massive wages).

I’d like to think we’ll continue with the model we’re currently operating, but we’d be with the added bonus that we didn’t have to sell our brightest talents if we’re in the receipt of parachute payments.

I honestly can’t see a downside to promotion.

It’s likely Ipswich are coming straight back down, but they now have a squad of very good young players at this level.

Admittedly a couple like Delap will want to move on… for big money!

It can have the effect it has had on Luton...

Can't kick the losing mentality.

Would not be surprised if that happens to Southampton next season.

Aside from the fact that I can't abide the Prmiership and all that it stands for, I really don't think we are ready for promotion yet. We have been compromised to much this year by changes in and disruption to the team in key places. Project Carrick has brought us some sublime moments and one exceptional run of form ... but it's not there yet, consistently enough. Our two best on the pitch leaders are getting a bit too long in the tooth to be consistently influential. So we really need that leader who is on the pitch, organising, directing and motivating .... and it looks like Carrick will have to buy one. Ayling and Howson aside, I can't see one in the squad.
Anyway, I'd much rather we went up as a deserved top two side that at least has a chance of surviving the Premiership.
It's alright saying "yeah but we'll come back down much better off". Maybe, but well have had to endure week after week of misery at games... and on here.

5 wins, 2 draws, 2 defeats would give us 70 points...would that vd enough? Possibly, it's doable
C'mon Boro

I’m always of the opinion that you have to try and win every game, whatever.

Otherwise, move over and let another club have a go.

Not really. We just have to win 1 match more then Coventry or WBA. Its looking like a sub-70 point 5th place finish this season which is super low. 6th is probably going to be even lower. We only need 5 wins from 9 to get 70 points. We can probably get there with 68 which means it can be done with 4 wins from 9, even more likely if one of those 4 is against Coventry.

That assumes a lot of things like Bristol City falling away, Coventry not sustaining their form, West Brom losing a couple of games heavily, and or Boro winning a couple of games by a few goals, and Blackburn and Watford not getting their act together.

Some of those are possible, but not all of them.

Also West Brom and Coventry are on track for 70 points, even if their form doesn't improve. Boro need more than 70.

I really don’t think Marv sees a downside either.
He’s simply outlining the inadequacy of the CURRENT squad.

None of them have to fall away. Their form over the course of the full season, like ours, is wildly inconsistent. I don't think any of them will beat 70 points so if we do we will be in the playoffs. I don't think we will either. That's the point I'm really trying to make is that we, or them, don't need to be on autos form to make the playoffs. Realistically 2 of the 6 teams are going to sneak in, and it could be any of them without any of them being spectacular, and then they'll get knocked out by the teams in 3rd/4th over two legs because they are not actually very good.

Coventry are on track for 70 (just, 69.62) and they have Sunderland, Sheff Utd and Burnley in the next 3 games so they could be on course for 64 after those 3. A lot of the teams have to play each other as well so they can't all be picking up points.

But that’s all hypothetical. We don’t know how this squad would perform in the Prem, but we do know the financial benefits of going up. And that outweighs everything else in my eyes.

I think this squad would surprise us in the prem tbh, they’re a very technical team. It’s the physicality we struggle with and we’re currently in a league full of bruisers.

But... I would still like to have a go.

Can't always predict when it clicks for a promoted club.
It has for us. I know it was a different world back then, but when we went up in 98 we lost our best player (Merson) and our best centre forward (Branca). Think Armstrong got injured pretty early on too and Hignett left.

The main signings we made were defenders (Cooper, Pally, Gordon). We started with a front 2 of Ricard and Beck, both labelled as donkeys by some fans.

Don't think anyone predicted at that point we'd end up having one of our best Premier league seasons!

Im sorry mate I really don't see this squad as technically strong at all.
The Premier league is faster and at least as physically demanding.

I would go up without hesitation, but the recruitment would have to be incredible, the financial support massive and the current players would have to step up hugely to be more than squad fillers.

Same can be said for any of the teams who might go up via the play offs this season though - and as I say it's a no brainer to take the place if won/offered.

So you think this current squad of players, who are extremely weak mentally, would benefit and perform better in the PL when facing far far superior players, teams, coaches?

I'll have what you're smoking.

If we fluked promotion, with this squad, then we would need a huge amount of investment in the squad.

This current squad would finish in the bottom 3 without a shadow of any doubt.

Wolves are currently the worst team in the PL that is on course to survive....and we are nowhere near their standard/level.

Then there's Leeds, and one of Sheff Utd/Burnley who have proved this season they are much stronger, wiser and powerful than us.

This. This is what I have issue with. It wouldn’t! We could carry on with the current model and sign young promising players to develop. If we get relegated, so be it. We’ll be in a stronger position than we’ve been in such a long time.

Yes I do. Whenever we’ve come up against the bigger teams we raise our level, we’ve seen this consistently. Who’s to say we wouldn’t? Nobody really knows.

And we wouldn’t need a huge investment. Bank the money, carry on with the model. That’s the way forward.

That's a lie.

Against the top 4 teams in this division:

Leeds away - they battered us. The best team we've played by far.
Leeds home - still to play
Sheff Utd home - we raised our game and won 1-0
Sheff Utd away - we were a disgrace and we were very very lucky to be going in at HT at 1-1. We lost 3-1, deservedly so.
Burnley home - draw. Both teams were poor
Burnley away - draw. Arguably we were the better team and a howler from Dieng cost us. But again, mentally weak.
Sunderland away - lost. We didn't lay a glove on them for the whole time we were 1-0 down.
Sunderland home - lost. We should've been 2 goals up inside first 20 mins or so...but again, or weak mentality allowed them back in the game. A draw was a fair result, probably....but we lost it at the death because we're not good enough.

So of the 8 fixtures against the best teams in the league...we have played 7, and won 1.

That is not 'raising our level consistently against the bigger teams'
