I’ve not read a novel in years

I'm currently enjoying Stephen King's latest, "Billy Summers". It's a crime thriller - no ghosts or vampires this time.

Recently, "Us" by David Nicholls and the Rotters' Club trilogy by Jonathan Coe have greatly entertained me.

Theres too much factual information to read. I dont want to waste that time reading the fiction going on in someones head.

It's difficult without a pointer as to what you like.

I'd highly recommend anything by Iain Banks (and Iain M Banks (he uses the M on his science fiction)).

Similarly Neil Gaiman rarely goes wrong and has done a few short story collections which are a great introdution.

As a one-off I'll always recommend Ferney by James Long - one of the best books I've ever read (there is a sequel which is okay but not as good as the original). It's a kind of magical realism thing with a great premise (although you have to pay attention).

Something I recommend to everyone as it took me my surprise are the Wool trilogy books by Hugh Howey. I thought they weren't something I would enjoy, boy was I wrong. All 3 books are brilliantly written.

My favourite read this year is also the shortest, which may suit someone just coming back to books. It's called Lanny, written by Max Porter and is an absolutely lovely little book.

Just started the expanse books after watching 5 series on amazon. Its strange as the books seem pretty much the same as the series so know what's going to happen (within reason).

That said 6 series and 9 books. So I'll go beyond the TV eventually 😂. I maybe should have read books first. I'm reading on my kindle so less daughting than 9 500 page books.

I love the Jeffery Archer chronicles, great author, Kane and Abel is a classic.
Seconded, just finished the last of 7 in this series, all brilliant and an author who makes you want to keep reading.

A few of my absolute favourites that I think anyone would love;

Birdsong - Sebastian Faulkes
White Tiger - Aravind Adiga
Shantaram - Gregory David Roberts

If you liked that you’d really enjoy Porters first book Grief is the thing with Feathers.
