Neil Warnock wants a yes or no answer from the players he’s approached to join him at Boro by early next week.

The new full-time Middlesbrough manager has revealed that the club have already made offers to several targets and wants an answer either way sooner rather than later.

Warnock has also indicated that he thinks Boro could potentially turn a profit from their transfer business this summer but admits it’s crucial he gets the “four or five” lads he needs if the club are to challenge for promotion next season.

“The players I’m after, there are bigger clubs or clubs with more money at the moment so it isn’t easy but we’ve got to somehow come up with these players.

“There will be players leaving and players big clubs will be looking at as well, some of our young lads, so we’ve got to see what develops in a short space of time and try and get the right players in that we need.

“I can’t see me spending fortunes,” he admitted. “I think we’ll generate income probably more than what I spend.

“I think next week, from Monday onwards, I’m going to start putting pressure on people and if they don’t want to come I’ll leave alone.

“But we do need quite a few, we need down the spine of the team one or two leaders and talkers.

“Otherwise we are just going to stay put in that mid-table area.”

His assertion that he will generate more money than he actually spends, suggests that 4 players in particular are likely to have a price (?):

Assombalonga
Fletcher
Johnson
Friend

Perhaps the first three (?) - certainly the first two - because they are on unsustainable salaries and have the highest move-on value? It would make sense.

I think we are in exciting times regards the clubs future(y)

Johnson and friend won't have a price. Certainly the first 2 aren't worth the outlay. What were they worth? 5 and 2 million maybe and their salaries are huge

It's best to wait and see.. I'm sure there will be a lot of signings and a few the other way but it's all part of the game.

He's been in this business for a long time and he's saying to other clubs (aswell as our players) you're not going to charge us extra just because we've paid out like a Donald trump casino in the past.

Fair point.
We wont get back what we paid out for those two, but better cut our losses before they just walk away. Another year of both salaries combined for two players who cost a reported total of 21M+ is beyond the clubs means and needs.

Every player has his price. I'd say those with the most value are probably Fry and Taverner purely because they're young English and Prem clubs have already been sniffing. They're on the radar. Even then it's probably £9m for Fry and £5m for Tav at a guess (I'd far rather keep Tav of the two though).

We'd probably accept £4-5m for Britt to get his wages off the books.

Fletcher is probably worth £5m, had a good season, still young. But not on as big wages as some.

McNair £5m probably.

Someone like Spurs might take a gamble on Spencer.

Any two of those and Warnock has maybe £10m to play with. Doubt we'll be paying any more than £2m for a player with a number of frees and players under £1m.

But fees aren't really the issue, it's wages. And that'll be the same for a lot of clubs. So turning a profit on fees doesn't really matter that much as long as our wage structure is sustainable. If we can move Britt on we should have quite a lot of room for manoeuvre on that front now.

Assombalonga's done well under Warnock, and he has a great bond with Fletcher, but I'm hoping we sell him to Bournemouth or the like to improve our financial situation.

His contribution can be replaced for cheaper and for less wages.

Agreed Festa , he will sell to buy
Britt £5-£6m
Fletcher £4m
McNair £5m
Fry £8m
Wing £2m
Spence £10m
Browne £1m
£36m in ,I think he will build a squad for 2/3 of that leaving a profit for January or back up.

Fair point.

Totally agree. We shouldn't look to spend heavily either during these times. We don't even know when crowds will be back. Organised teams with a sprinkling of talent is enough to be competitive in this division

Sounds to me like we could get some serious money for Spence. Reckon Spurs will be in for him, I can remember Jose being impressed by him during the FA Cup games.

Prices and salaries will have collapsed throughout football.

Today is not yesterday, lots of very good players will be desperate for a club.

I doubt there are 5 clubs outside the premier League who can 9sy more than a few million for a player.

There's no way in my mind he sells 6 of his first XI..

Yeah think it'll be two or three first team regulars at most (preferably Britt for his wages). Unless we just get daft offers too good to turn down. Seems unlikely in the current climate.

I wonder if they've already had tentative inquiries for the likes of Fry and Spence. Could be why he sounds confident of turning a profit.

In my wildest dreams (it's definitely not a night or two in the company of Scarlett Johansson 🤣) we get 8,000,000 for Britt and similar for Fry with Ben coming back on semi permanent loan... No need to ship out anyone to get cash then so we could decide who stays / goes. 🙏
