How the hell are Preston 7 points ahead of us

Didn’t even realise till i checked the table just now 😳 they absolutely stunk the Riverside out when we beat them 4-0 and weren’t much better on Wednesday despite somehow winning - they’re 1 point off the top 6 😵‍💫 I don’t get it 😭

Two things to note. They've a goal difference of -8, so they've won narrowly and lost big.

And they picked up 19 points from the first seven games to our two.

Oh yeah - I forgot they won a load on the bounce at the start didn’t they. Awful to watch though, proper long ball merchants

I know, I thought they were awful the other night but somehow we contrived to lose the match. When you consider that game and the 2 against Rotherham there's 8 more points we should easily have had which would have put us right up in the play off mix.

Their best player has missed most of the season as well but they've got 2 decent strikers in Keane and Riis which always gives you a chance.

There was a stat read out by the Preston commentators that they have only had 100 shots but they've scored 42 goals.

We haven’t been great this year.
We had the run of 7/8 wins and we all hoped that would be the norm…it’s looking more and more like the outlier.

Yeh. It's more that we're not good than that Preston are. Preston are as midtable as you get. They finish about 12th every year and they will again this year.

Preston are only out of the play offs on goal difference
That means that - up to now - they are picking up points
A minus anything goal difference only loses half a point
Good luck to them - unless.its them or us for 6th place

Unlike us, they’re clinical in the final third.

They had a great start so living of that at the moment .. we were the better team last wednesday but couldnt hit a barn door with a banjo

Absolutely, it’s kind of the difference between having a couple of key players who were injured, available for those games and we’d probably have won them, them’s the fine margins in this league - but Preston….Jesus wept - they are rank !

Preston play to their strengths, not sure we always do.
What are our strengths, tippy tappy the ball about without having any real shots on target..

Possession doesn't win games. goals do... we need to address this problem for next season.

Shocking Middlesbrough goal conversion revealed after Preston

After the game last night, journalist Dominic Shaw shone a light on Boro’s inability to find the back of the net, despite their impressive shots statistics.

In the last three games (two losses and a draw), Boro have had 51 shots, but only 12 of those have been on target and only three have been converted, making for a shot conversion rate of 5.88%.

I do find it interesting how in modern football the role of the #10 has stopped being known as the “second striker”. I know Akpom dropped deep and wasn’t a #9 but he was absolutely, at least by the definition I’d have used until about 2015, a second striker. Hence why he scored 29 goals.

We need a clinical finisher, that is basically our main problem when you consider the chances we make - having said that, defensively we need to cut out the basic errors that are gifting goals to the opposition
