How many points has Lumley cost us

im sick of seeing our defenders pass him the ball when he has an attacker closing him down, about time a defender realised that’s not a good idea,
It's the way we play now. If we stop doing it we just revert to Warnock/Pullis "safety first" football, I don't think anyone really wants that?

He made two mistakes last night, the scuffed clearance which went IIRC to Johnny Howson and the charge out of the box missing the ball. But mostly he is OK with the ball at his feet. Much higher rated keepers than him have made that sort of mistake, I've seen Schmeichel do it and Ederson. I'm not saying he is as good as either of those (he wouldn't be playing for us if he was) just that if we play the way we do, our keepers (whoever we pick) will occasionally make that sort of mistake. But the more we persist with it the better his judgement will get. The charge out of the box is a good example of that, he got away with it but the experience should help to improve his situational awareness going forward. Also you have to remember our defenders are relatively new to the system so they need to know when to tap it into touch as Fry did and when you can safely entrust it to Joe.

I agree with you, the issue I have is too often Dijksteel or Fry will pass the ball to Lumley when no one is closing them down, they are in space but still pass it back even if the opposition striker is closer to Lumley than them, they’d rather pass the responsibility over than deal with it themselves.

Lumley was crap under Warnock….

Maybe that's it.

I'm going to conciously try to give Lumley more benefit of the doubt. I have to admit I may have been biased with him recently. It's very difficult to watch something like him botch a clearance or rushing out and missing the ball and not think "this idiot again ". Part of me thinks it's a habit I've got into after a season watching Betty in nets.

But there's been a lot of good points made backing him up.

If your at the game you see the whole picture. At QPR we played them off the park and got a point, why.... because when called upon Marshall pulled off some great saves and kept them in the game. We all know what happened after getting back in the game but **** up aside the defence was sound. How tall is JL ? To me he seems to have a fundamental flaw in anticipating shots, he seems flat footed, the Chair goal was a good shot around some players but for a keeper of his size he never got close.
Same again yesterday, no chance with the first even if he had anticipated the near post it was well struck but the second, I had seen trees come down quicker the day before. Yes you can blame the defence for letting the City guy run
across the box but it wasn't a good strike, it bobbled on the way but he never got close to stopping it.
The Bristol defence were not great and yes you can be critical of our attack but we did create and make some great chances but when called upon Bentley looked sound, got his angles right and kept us out, like Marshall not a world beater just a solid Champo keeper.
Problem is we don't have a solution and it could cost us (may have done already). Unlike the keeper situation we do have some options up front and I think we will come good. The stats from these two games tell the story, we can dominate in away games now, we have a good defence, we are creating chances, but having confidence in the keeper is key to success, so come on Joe sort it out, we want you to succeed. UTB
Well all that work against WBA down the pan, CW will have to hold his hands up playing JLS but I doubt we will see him again anyway, 45 was enough. As per my previous post I was willing to give JL another chance (well 5 actually) but he is just not up to the task. Lacks confidence, balance, agility, command of his box, he gets in the way of a few but they usually go straight back into the danger area. The nutmeg today, well it's not exactly travelling is it.
OK I cannot condone the amount of chances we missed today either but I honestly think we are putting pressure on our strikers because they know we are only a micro second away from another self inflicted disaster at the back.

Far too many for my liking.

If we'd had Randolph between the posts for us this season then we'd currently be fighting it out for the autos. Not good enough for this league by some distance.

We must be looking at about 15 points now, one of the worst players this club has seen in a long time

I see Wilder said he has “protected” Lumley a lot this season. I said he was man managing him with his comments after the QPR error.

He said something about two other lads putting him in that position in the first place to make the mistake.

I guess Wilder was doing the right thing but it’s clear Lumley is a problem that needs solving.

Wilder was lumbered with a squad full of players that he wouldn't have picked. Wilder had a limited budget to work with and players on contracts that he couldn't get out.

So he was stuck with Lumley, Daniels, and Stojanovic. He managed to find a loan for Stojanovic, that left and brough Brynn back. This freed up money for Riley McGree to come in.

Ideally, he would have like to get both keepers out and 2 new ones in, but you can't make wholesale squad changes that easily in january.

He'll find a more long term solution next season, for now it's patch up and carry on with the dross that Warnock signed.

The better goalkeepers aren’t available , unless you pay too much for them and pay them too much wages . But unfortunately that’s what you have to do if you want to compete .
same with strikers and holding midfielders .
when your keeping to a budget, all you end up getting is a fingers crossed maybe.
which as we all know 99/100 dosnt work .
it’s a game of chance and ambition from the club owner, and how far he’s willing to go .
£50 million, striker, keeper and a ‘Ramirez’ type attacking midfielder with a brain , and you have a good chance of promotion .
would our chairman release £50million , I very much doubt it
and then you have….would they leave where they are to come to the north east .
it’s a fickle game
