How many of us NEVER saw a game at Ayresome Park?

I turned 18 a few months after the last match at AP, so it wasn't a major issue for me, but I can't recall anyone even having a beer in AP. I think it was banned for all of the 8 seasons I went there. Am I right and, if so, when did they stop serving beer there?

I always think if you really wanted to improve the RS atmosphere, you'd get rid of the beer.
I agree.
I don't think there ever was alcohol on sale. Same for most clubs I think. The first ground where I saw beer being sold was Home Park, Plymouth.

Alcohol for the hundred club only at AP?
I remember being surprised to see beer on sale at Wolves for the infamous fa cup replay in 81.

Nope. I wasn't really into football as a kid, so never went. In fact I only really started following football properly off the back of Euro 96. What a tournament!

"The hooliganism really reduced the amount of games I attended early on." perhaps a stupid question, but out of curiosity I have to ask why ?

I think it was on the wane when I started going in 1988, but my Dad certainly refused to take me to what became known as the battle of Stamford Bridge because of the likely threat of it.

I'd have done the same in his position now. It's one of the great myths of hooliganism that they didn't touch people who didn't want to be involved.

I think I'd also be ashamed of being associated with the actions of hooligans following my club.

100% true about the myth. Countless innocent fans on the receiving end, even fatally.

People don't remember the crowds of 4k in a 40k ground or getting soaked through after standing in the rain for 90 minutes or watching a match partly through a vertical post or losing part of your vision because someone 8 inches taller is in front of you and the camber on the terracing is only 2 inches.

In the early 1980s - half the crowd were males aged 14 to 25 which does change an atmosphere.

I first went in the early 90s once I'd started earning money on my paper round and then milk round, as my mam wouldn't pay for me to go. There were 3 of us and I was the only one interested in football.

I've never seen a game at Ayresome Park - I think my first game was Birmingham in 1996.
All I can remember is Emerson scored from "the half way line"... but I was only 7 years old and I can't find a video of the goal... so it might have been from just outside the box.
It might also not have been Birmingham, but they played in blue.

Agreed, some of the atmospheres experienced at the Riverside have been incredible, arguably better than those at the big AP games. Not sure whether the whole ground ever got singing at Ayresome.
More intense perhaps if you were in the middle of the holgate though.
The ZDS game against Villa 3 sides of the ground were rocking when the 2nd goal went in, and not singing but more mocking a Pompey player in the 94/95, I forget who it was but he had an old firm connection and when he got sent off all four sides were singing "Cheerio" and waving their arms to him in unison, it was quite funny.
