How big a name is Juninho in Brazil?

As the title suggests, Ive seen people jokingly say they hope Juninho has a word in Muniz' ear, but how well respected is the little fella over there do you reckon? Which English player would you suggest is similar in terms of stature (in name not size ;)) etc to the English public? Michael Owen maybe?

well he was player of the year before he joined us, he was in a squad that won the world cup, he was the president of a club that exceeded expectations, he hired Doriva for that club, who then went on to manage the national team.

And didn't he get some big wig role in the Brazillian FA?

I reckon the other Juninho is a bigger name for Brazilians.

Interesting comment, looking at their national team careers our Juninho got more caps 49 (5 goals) versus 40 caps (6 goals) for 'Lyon Juninho'. Although his dead ball speciality might have made him stick in the memory more though, he scored around 50 more goals than TLF over the course of his club career. However TLF did have those injuries and rehab periods to content with.

Juninho always classed himself as a creator not a scorer of goals although he still scored a fair few. Of course Premier League has always been a higher standard than League 1 as well.

Yeah that was my thinking with the free-kicks.

I also did a quick google for best ranked Brazilians and in almost all of them the Lyon version was in there and ours wasn't :(

Yes, I'd agree with all of that, TLF undoubtedly played at a higher level throughout his career. I know Juninho Pernambucano probably played more in European competition, but his league games will have been undoubtedly easier due to the weaker leagues/opposition.

I have to admit as much as I thought Juninho was the most skillful / exciting player I witnessed in a Boro shirt, I thought his freekicks where usually awful! This was exaggerated as the first time I really noticed him was against England (Umbro Cup?) when he scored that brilliant goal direct from a free kick - did we train it out of him 🤣

Obviously Brazil's history is littered with superstars so it's really hard to get a feel for how big someone like Juninho would be. Also most of their big names have spent their careers at massive European clubs. He was part of a world cup winning team and from a brief time working there his name was always met with some warmth but he must be way down the list in terms of "big names".

Agreed he falls into the B list category for Brazil, not in the same A class of the top 20 or so of all-time such as Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Pele, Rivaldo, Romario, Socrates and Zico.....but in that much bigger group of top class (but not top of the class) players like Careca, Ze Roberto and Hulk

As a player, perhaps - well he did win Brazillian player of the year - and not many B list players accomplish that.
But his profile is more than his playing record in Brazil - all which are mentioned above.

So overall, from a football community perspective - I would say he is very well known
