Honest Assessment

Once I seen the starting line up today, I was never overly confident. Crooks and Rogers are too similar for me. Lack pace to really stretch teams. Add McGree and Forss into the mix and I’m not sure Millwall were ever really worried about us getting in behind.

The first half was sluggish. All of the problems I thought we’d have came to fruition.

Millwall played a typical game. Sit deep, frustrate and try to catch us on the break. They had the best of the efforts on goal. Despite us having a lot of possession their keeper never had to make a save.

A couple of decent openings were created towards the end of the first half but we lacked a cutting edge.

Second half, thought we came out to the traps pretty well. Added a bit more tempo and the game opened up a little. We were still plagued by our ability to find a killer ball.

On balance, a draw would have been a fair result. We were always going to be vulnerable to a counter attack. McNair was rash in the challenge that led to the goal - thought he was pretty solid prior to that. Very disappointing goal to concede.

Overall, we just didn’t look like scoring.

All the gaps in the squad today were in obvious.

LB - Coulson done alright but he’s not a long term solution. Bit of a headless chicken, positionally poor. He’s not improved in 5 years.

RB - Paddy will fill in okay in the short term. Always going to have that mistake in him.

CM - Hackney was very good but needs some better players around him. Barlaser was okay but a bit ponderous. Not a JH replacement yet.

Final 3rd

Rogers - Lots of good link up but he’s not a striker. We need a striker desperately.

Crooks - tries hard but not good enough as a 10 or striker.

McGree - seemed off the pace again for large parts. Needs quicker and better players around him.

Forss - Guilty of trying too hard in the second half. Would prefer him up top ahead of Rogers at the moment.

Subs - Happy to see Howson get on. Silvera looked decent, hope to see more of him moving forward.

Overall, it’s not the end of the world. We played lots of “nice football” in the first 2/3’s of the pitch. We desperately need more quality in the final third.

Carrick has got lots right in his short managerial career but thought that team selection today was wrong. We were desperate for more pace and trickery through Jones / Silvera.

Just hope the inured lads are back soon and we make some key signings that are desperately needed. UTB!

I'd agree with most of that. Main highlights for me today were:-

* Silvera, he looked like he could make something happen and I imagine he'll get a shot from the start against Huddersfield to show what he can do;
*Dieng, commanded his box, played the sweeper keeper role really well and looked promising;
*Watmore going to the Boro bench when subbed and getting the pish ripped out of him by the Millwall bench;
* The new clampdown on time wasting is great to see, guy booked for obvious kicking the ball away and decent time added on for subs/wasted time;
* It's one game, and we still have lots of time to plug the gaps in the squad. Plus it really won't take many extra bodies to make us so much more competitive.
