HMRC Lodge Wigan Athletic Wind Up Order

Last 6 year trophy wins:

Man City 11
Liverpool 3
Arsenal 1
Chelsea 1
Man Utd 1
Leicester 1

Even Chelsea, arsenal and Man Utd have been relegated to outside chance of trophies. They are the new Middlesbrough, Pompey, etc

Funny one Wigan. They had big financial problems when they were last relegated from the championship. Then got taken over by the current fella, got promoted and then financial problems started again and got relegated. Not sure what 'fit and proper' checks he went through, but obviously not thorough enough and this was only about two years ago. Again, its the fans who suffer.

A lot of the problems were caused by just how much he spent to get them promoted, apparently.

Very similar to Bury in that regard.

People go on about Leeds being a Rugby League city, but Wigan is the very epitome of that

Edit : even though Wigan isn't a City ! ..... you know what I mean !

I’ll take it back then as maybe I’m just bitter

I stand by every word with Pompey though it’s criminal they kept that cup win.

The day when results can be changed after the final whistle is surely the day the game dies?

Fans need to know, whatever else, when the final whistle is blown, the game is over and the result stands.

This "fit an proppa" is crap really.
When blood money and incompetents get past the "test" - it makes a mockery of the whole thing [like the previous owners at Blackpool / Bolton / Oldham / Macclesfield / Bury / Notts County....]
Football ownership is an open door to dirty money.

Glad we have a local man done good. Not to say it will remain that way. But, for us, "success" is promotion and a good cup run. It`s shrewd Management and financial prudence. (y)

The ‘fit and proper’ tests are very limited in what they can do. If the new owner hasn’t got a history of bankrupcy and can prove they have funds then I’m not sure what else the fa can do.

They can’t force them to spend money, they can force them to act with integrity and the future of the club as paramount

It was absolutely mind boggling how they were operating. The nearly went bust a few seasons back but then bizarrely decided to throw a lot of money (which is clear now they didn't have), on getting promoted. Now if thats what new owners decide to do then thats up to them, but surely a couple of consolidation seasons wouldn't have went a miss? Quite a few of their fans where giving it the 'bigg'un' on their board at the time, clearly couldn't see the wood for the trees. I hope they don't go pop, but the owners would only have themselves to blame if they did.

I suppose we were an early casualty for lots of what happened after: Amer was the local "Big" Man who derived status from his Chairmanship of Boro - after his days as Band-leader were behind him. Money was spent we didnt have and bad decisions were paid for, by losing quality players, replaced by second class merchants and journeymen. Ultimately the town nearly lost its identity in its football team - and we nearly all ended up watching Darlo, Billingham Synth, Stockton Town an Pools!!!!

Not really. Like us they had a local fan with a lot of money they were willing to spend. They had the PL money but they were punching well above their weight thanks to Whelan. The town/fanbase is too small to sustain success without a wealthy backer.

They don't get anywhere near the crowds we do. It's a poor area and their main priority, by far, is rugby league. I know quite a few people in Wigan and not a single one of them supports the football team. They are all rugby fans or Man Utd fans if they are into football.
Me too. I know lots of people from the close surrounding towns too, all United.
