Henderson to Saudi!

If Man City were looking to move Mahrez on it suits them, they get a fee for him.
He might walk into any team in Europe but which team could realistically afford his wages and pay a transfer fee. At 32 I don’t see any elite European team being able to sign him.

Ok, but that’s not really my point.

My point is this isn’t a little pre-retirement adventure, like people maybe thought it was when Ronaldo went there. There are top level players now going over there who still have a lot to offer and are in their early-30s.

Assume that'll be Southgate immediately dropping Henderson then?

If he won't pick players from the championship can't see how he can select players playing in an inferior league to it.

the majority of - former - top players that seem to be heading there at the moment seem to be 30+ so have peaked & are on the way down, still may have many good years ahead... but certainly not up & coming players..

It does seem like a 'nice' pay day & retirement circuit.. tbh not one I'd fancy, I'd much more go the Messi route & experience the US or maybe even as Lineker did & Japan.. maybe Aus, Scandinavia: Norway / Sweden.. that would be more fun that Saudi - IMHO.

You'd hope so, but I'd have preferred Henderson being phased out for England anyway, even if he'd stayed at Liverpool.

Yes the same. Bellingham, Rice and another are the future of the England midfield now. It’s probably about time Southgate looked at Willock from Newcastle too. Especially as he’ll be playing Champions League.

Henderson probably had a word with Southgate before the move. He’ll keep himself fit, play fewer games so is available for the European Championship if needed.

Remember in 1997 when we got relegated, Juninho was told by the Brazil manager at the time he wouldn't be considered for international selection unless he played in a top league. Hence the move to Atletico Madrid.

So completely agree, Southgate should be looking at any current England international going over there and saying the standards in football aren't there, so based on that won't be selected.

We will then see what the priorities are for these players £££££ or sporting glory.

Yup. And if nothing else what does it say about where his heads at?

Clearly not interested in challenging himself or sporting glory anymore. Why would you want someone who's mentally checked out on that front representing England anyway? (and it's not like he's irreplaceable).

At least if you picked someone from the championship they'd be hungry and match sharp. As we know it's a fiercely competitive league.

And interesting that quite a lot of responses are supportive. Winter does come across as a bit of chippy cynic. Fair play to him for jacking it in. He's made his money. Still shouldn't be anywhere near the England team.

Quite a reasonable deal for Hendo.
6 months in Saudi and now he wants to leave in time for the European Trophy having banked about £7 Million . Nice work if you can get it.

So turns out it is possible for him to turn down significant amounts of money after all.

A few posters are going to be shocked given how sure they were no-one could possibly say no to it.
