FMTTM posters are a well travelled lot, full of experience.
Mrs I and I are travelling to Vienna/Bratislava/Budapest in early April.
Flying into Vienna 2 nights, then train to Bratislava 2 nights, then train to Budapest for 3 nights.
I know we could do with longer in each city, but was looking for any recommendations you might have.
What tips might you have for each city including to and from Vienna and Budapest airports from city centre.
Hotels are all booked and all very central.
I'd appreciate any advice.
Cheers

Have an outdoor spa/party in Buda(fkn)Pest, but have a shower afterwards!!!

Don‘t drink Golden Pheasant in Bratislava.

Laugh at Austrian’s jokes, they are genuinely funny people

I'm slightly envious fella.

A few years we did something similar.

Flew to Prague and had three nights there, then train to Vienna for four nights, train to Budapest for three nights, then flew home from there.

We loved Vienna and from what I can remember the highlights were the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Belvedere, St. Stephen's Cathedral and The Hofburg.

Budapest is simply beautiful. There's the Parliament Building, Fisherman's Bastion, The Funicular, St. Stephen's Basilica, Matthius Church, Buda Castle. The list is endless.

Have a great time!

Its a few years since I was in Budapest, I used to go regular with work. At the airport just outside the exit there was a booth to the left where they would get you a taxi (pretty much immediately) and give you the price so no rip offs. Coming back I just got the hotel to call one for me.

Its a great city Budapest but quite big. I would recommend getting the hop on / off bus 2 day pass and it will take you around all of the sights from Hero's Square over to the castle district so you can then decide where to go back to. I think it includes a river cruise as well. Check out some of the fabulous coffee houses, ruin pubs on an evening, the indoor market etc (as above).

I'm actually going for 4 nights in April so really looking forward to it and seeing how it's changed.

'Two nights in Bratislava is one too many. Have an extra one in one of the others.'

Brat old town is lovely, we did two nights, but sorry, yes one is enough. It's quite small. Use the other night to explore the wider town maybe, meet some locals?
Vienna is huge, we only had a day and really didn't see enough of it. We want to go back
For anyone, Bratislava and Vienna are an hour apart on the train, it's a great split long weekend

The views from the top of the Giant Ferris wheel in Vienna are good as well, easy to find as you can see it from afar, nice little walk over to it as well.

Further to that make sure you take your passport as checks are done at the border. No fun if you are on the bus and get kicked off.

We got the bus from Brat to Vienna and it takes around and hour or so via Vienna airport. The Airport itself is a good 20 minute bus from the main bus/train station. We found there was very little signage and just followed our instincts to find the historic area of Vienna. Bus are cheap enough as well as comfortable. If you are looking for cheap food and ale stay away from Brat old town and the obligatory Irish Bar, which we found most of our plane load from the Dirties camping for the night.

We did the exact same trip a few years ago. Budapest was by far our favourite. Beautiful city. And the “ruin bars” are worth a night out. Get on a free walking tour early doors then go back to see what took your fancy on the walk.

Bratislava - one night was enough but you are booked in now. There is a viewing tour that has a restaurant at the top. Worth a look. You can go and just get a drink like we did.

Wasn’t the most welcoming place in my experience. Watch out for scammer taxis outside the train station. We took one into centre. Quoted €10 then demanded €20 on arrival. Also the only place I’ve walked out of a restaurant because we were made to feel so unwelcome that we didn’t talk the lingo.

We did a Danube river cruise to Budapest a couple of years ago. Passport check at Schiphol and that was it.

Not sure if you’ve ever watched Travel Man on ch 4, but they’ve done a half hour program on Vienna and Budapest. You don’t need to like the host or comedian to be able to get some decent insight in what to see in a whistlstop visit, as they cram stuff into a 48 hr stop.
