Have the police lost our trust?

I haven’t trusted them since I was a kid at a Boro match and police had black tape over their numbers. I was about 10 and asked our Mam why they did that and she said so they can get away with murder. This wasn’t long after Hillsborough. I didn’t fully get what she meant at that time but it’s always stayed with me.

Barely a day goes by goes by without news of corruption, racism, sexism, assault… all manner of unlawful and appalling behaviour within our police forces and institutions. I wouldn’t trust them as far as I could throw them.

There are bad apples in every cart. The problem is there is no margin for error in the police, and there are a lot of camera phones. I don’t tar them all with the same brush though, even if plenty of them don’t deserve to be trusted. I know a few police officers, some are nice and some aren’t.

I do feel sorry for the little lad in the video, whatever’s gone on that isn’t something he should have to see.

That was 25 years ago, I’d expect things have changed considerably since then.

Of course many of the articles are utter nonsense / based on unfounded claims simply written so as to obtain clicks / “sell papers”.

And even the ones that have a basis in truth would be so far outweighed by all of the thousands of good things that the police do on a day to days basis, if of course those stories “sold papers” but unfortunately they don’t.

Why would I?
Well personally if I met two people and I didn’t know anything about either of them, other than one was a cop and one wasn’t.

I’d be far more inclined to trust the cop simply because I’d know that they have been professionally vetted (and would continue to be professionally vetted).

Therefore I’d be more confident they wouldn’t have convictions for things like offences against children / violence / dishonesty related offences I.e theft etc etc

I'd say on average I probably don't trust them as a group but all the individuals I know that are police officers I would trust 100%.

I know guys who are police at various levels and seem like decent guys. I’ve seen things done by police that are unsupportable. I suspect they need a makeover and a bringing up to date. Maybe there is a lads club element and maybe some need to be brought up to date professionally .

Is that statement somewhat of an oxymoron?

Anyway it’s probably because >99% of police officers are good people.

However stories about the <1% that aren’t good people are far more popular than stories about the >99% that are good people.

What horrendous and unsupportable things have you seen?

My best mate is a copper, I’d trust him with my life, really. In the words of Michael Jackson, ”one bad apple don’t spoil the whole bunch“

I seen a few of them especially at matches, but I have seen good ones as well. I have had a few mates who have been coppers, and when you get to meet other coppers off duty you kinda can tell the ones who might have their own way of doing things, and that is where the problem is , there is just a much a code of not grassing up amongst coppers as there is in the people they are supposed to be targeting, it is mostly a tight knit community where they look after each other, that needs to be challenged somehow.
