Have the club let Carrick down?

I believe so.
I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he left in the summer. We’ve sold Tav, Spence, Akpom and Rogers for approx £40 million over last couple of years, and we brought in an untested gamble in Lath and some young ‘prospects’ and untested-at-this-level players from inferior leagues. We had to change plans and cancel Coburn's loan right at the end of the window, (which would have probably been the best move for his development), because we only had one striker on the books! (Not counting Forss, cos they clearly don’t see him as a striker, despite giving him minutes up top yesterday).
Despite Coburn and Lath being crocked for large chunks of the season, and us having tried various attacking midfielders up top over past few months, we went through the January transfer window without addressing the striker issue. Yes, we’ve had appalling injuries that have hugely impacted our season. Yes we’ve had a couple of successes in the market in RDVB and Dieng (why the **** isn’t he playing?!?!) Yes Carrick’s selection hasn’t been great sometimes - Hackney out of position, Dieng on the bench when supposedly fit, etc
Ultimately though, when all is said and done, we’ve got no focal point of the team. Not enough reliable/tried and tested/good enough strikers. We frequently are chasing games and ‘batter’ teams in the second half, and by that I only mean dominating possession in and around the box, but without creating much in the way of shots on goal or proper chances. We’ve asked Carrick to get us promoted and then we’ve lost 45+ goals from the team in Archer, Akpom and Ramsey and we’ve replaced them with youngsters, projects and untested players. We’ve tied one hand behind his back and blindfolded him. This seasons failings lie squarely on our lack of investment and recruitment where it matters, and if I was Carrick I’d be mightily cheesed off. Think this will end up proving to have been a missed opportunity to achieve something with a very good up and coming manager. Ho hum.

*Probably win the next three games and then we’ll all be talking about play offs again, like the silly mugs we are. Nothing but disappointment awaits us this season. Potentially a summer that is all about the loss of Hackney, RVDB, McGree and Carrick. I know I’m being pessimistic and I’m normally a very optimistic Boro fan, but I’m really feeling massive ‘what could have been’ vibes at the minute, and the blame shouldn’t lie with Carrick.

100%.

The January window especially.

Not signing a second striker in the summer was damaging.

Not signing a striker in January when we had no fit ones was an appalling decision, and then we sold Crooks and Rogers to cap it off.

Carrick has made plenty of mistakes this season, but he's also been hamstrung by what's available to him.

There was clearly a strategy after failing to get promoted last season, and having to let the heart of that team leave. Akpom, Archer, Ramsey and Giles were all massively better than what has replaced them. The club tried to get similar players for a fraction of the cost, but it was a gamble that hasn’t worked.

That said, our problems at home have been the same for months. Unable to play out from the back through a press. Teams know the quality isn’t there and we will gift them the ball in attacking areas. Plymouth and Bristol didn’t need to do too much.

Nero hits the nail on the head and average players in average teams pick our pocket leaving the zigzag defence wide open!

Don't blame the players..... They are being asked to do, something they aren't good enough to do..... They are playing to instructions!

Manager and coaches to blame!

Manager - his philosophy and tactics ...

Coaches - should be telling him..... It's not working... CHANGE!

Why does everyone seem to distance MC from recruitment, I would say he a big part of the recruitment process. Also he has been saying for some time that we have enough forward options and he wasn't concerned.

Because there is absolutely no chance whatsoever that Carrick believes that.

No manager would be happy with spending half the season without a fit striker.

I don't know what he actually believes, I can only go by what he says, but he is part of the recruitment team.

Carrick can only give an opinion on who he's interested in, he's not scouting or negotiating with players.

He doesn't sign or sell players, the club does.

He’s got to say that, hasn’t he? He seems a decent bloke. He’s not going to come out and say anything negative about the club or staff. He’s got to play the media game.
We don’t know what he really thinks.

We’ve seen what he can with the right players though.
We've seen what he can do with 40 -50 million worth of players in the championship. We got lucky with loan players working out, reality is that he's not going ti have that luxury going forward. He need to show what he can do with players who fit in our budget

There is a difference between saying I'm happy with the forward options and goals can be shared around and we didn't manage to sign someone so we will have to manage and make the best of what we have available.

The last part isn't being critical of anyone.

Maybe MC does believe he has got players who are flexible enough to play in the different positions, what we see tells us something different but he may be seeing something different.

Our recruitment strategy suggests that we’re broke. We’ve been selling anyone of any value, and I’m not sure we’ve hit bottom yet. Talking about this or that seems pretty pointless until we know what our level is. We might well be a League 1 club?
