Hate the tories but..

I like this website for it's social conscience, with a general left leaning bent that pervades this website but so many people will just randomly slam any government policy regardless of what it is and also seem to have a blind eye to social justice if it any way impacts them. Time and again certain threads are about the Tories bashing older people ...

The tories bought in the triple lock pension that almost guarantees year on year increases in wealth for pensioners above others in soceity (pensions have recently increased way above earnings in the last decade)

The tories are presumably going to increase NI to fund social care (about bleedin time someone did something) that will have a disproportionate benefit to the older generations. Too right it should be but then again schools etc

Given the demagraphic of this website, generally older people like me, the tories are falling over themselves to fund us .. try looking at what gets spent on a child versus a pensioner. Try looking at how that has changed in the last 10 years.

You'd think reading through comments on this website that the Tories are against old people. There is a huge focus on protecting the elderly (purely for electoral reason obviously as that's what they care about, pensioners vote after all).

Consider why they are using NI to raise money for the social care stuff, rather than Income tax... we all know what the answer is

Essentially the last decade has seen a big shift of wealth to older generations, which must be paid for by somebody

Bet, there are a fair few on this website who are relatively well off - carping in about wanting their 8.5% pension increase.... poor pensioners need support as do MANY OTHERS in soceity, well off pensioners should give it a break and understand cash should be given to the young many of whom are in great need instead of what I read which is incredulity that baby boomers are so badly treated.

The modern world for a 20 something doesnt have cheap housing, final salary pensions, they have to work their butts off in a globally competitive world whilst looking forward to what the IFS reckon will be the highest overall tax levels (not just income tax) since 2nd world war.... part of which is because of..

Yes thanks the Lord for the triple lock every year. Unless god forbid it gives pensioners a decent rise and then suspend it for a year.

Only a Tory could come up with that misinformed BS

To start with the triple lock was brought in by the 2010 Tory-Lib Dem coalition govt not a Tory govt, it would never have been brought in by the Tories alone who have shafted older pensioners in particular by leaving pre-2016 pensioners £42 a week worse off than new pensioners, the loss of free tv licences for over 75s etc.

Social care should be paid for wholly by the state from the revenues of tax and NI that pensioners contribute to all their lives (yes we pay tax even on our state pension). The savings and investment that people like me have made through our lives was made to give to our families on our demise not clawed back by a bunch of grubby lying Tory crooks whose own wealth is stashed in offshore funds etc. If there has to be a threshold at all to contribute to social care let it be the inheritance tax threshold.

ps what happened to the £350m a week Brexit dividend that was supposed to be given to NHS?

My mam is in her 80s.
From 14 to 65 she worked at least five days a week and sometimes had three jobs on the go.
She kept the roof over our heads and [just about] food on the table.
She paid taxes, just like the rest of our family - as an insurance ["Social Security"] to act as a safety net in times of need and to provide care and support in old age.
Its not like she hasnt paid her way - like many others who have toiled away at schitty jobs to pay the bills.
Where the flip has the money gone?
Into private health care, the pockets of big pharma and the huge global corporations who have received billions from their friends in Parliament.
Disgraceful.

Welcome to the board. Now clear off there's a good little shill.

What a Tory can never understand, as ably demonstrated by your post, is that some people don't just want to look after number one. I'd rather my pension was made safe by them not stealing my house if I need to go into care. I'd also prefer it that they looked after the young people and gave them a fair chance in life. So not lock away wealth and privilege for the top 5% like they do. I'd rather they ran the NHS properly instead of as a cash cow for their chums (same for care homes). I'd rather natural monopolies like water were in public hands and not sold to profiteering scum bag associates of the ruling class (or the highest bidder). I'd rather public transport was run as a non profit making service to enable people to travel without forcing them into cars. There's more but you wouldn't understand.

But mostly I just wish that the Tories would just fukk right off and when they get there fukk off some more.

I keep wondering at what point VAT is going back to 17.5%?

so we've had a 2.5% VAT tax increase, 1.25% NI increase and wage growth has been poor the last decade yet council tax has been forced up to pay for adult social care. 3-5% every year for ages

don't worry, the NHS can have a clap.

Why start a new thread on The same subject as already here ?

Just one thing about taxes. What does all the taxes on motorists pay for? When you buy a car you pay VAT, when you get an MOT or pay a garage bill you pay VAT, you pay yearly car tax and you pay more tax on fuel. Driving around, it certainly is not spent on the roads.

Do you trust them to do want you think they are going to do. I wouldn't trust them to go to the shop for me with a note.
The figures mentioned on the news would still mean them taking my house if I went into long term care. I'm sure they said that would not happen in future.

18 years old joined the Labour club at St Andrews University , never once or considered voting Tory, though voted Lib Dem as many times as Labour. At St Andrews there werent many working class kids from the North East and there were 7 of us in the Labour club but hey I wasnt doing it to make friends.

Whilst I agree on many of your points the big big difference between you and I and the likes of Kuepper is I am not so brainwashed as to able to look at things with a bit of balance. I have no problem if some of my friends would vote conservative though pro Brexit would be a bit of a challenge (very few if any did). I would personally just enjoy the debate with them, and I can see certain points on the Economy that I would lean to the Tories on.

Being 90% in favour of Left wing policies and 10% Right wing doesnt make you evil it just makes you normal

I started work with BA straight after graduation and from that got a strong feeling that the customers of the airline were in a much stronger position post privitisation, that changed my views on a few things but on balance I'd be in favour of say rail privatisation which is more of a natural monopoly.

I think some of the smartest people I have known/ worked with can see multiple ways of looking at things, arent trapped in idealogies and have emotional intelligence.

Now again I dont like giving money to the richest baby boomers when it should be given to younger struggling families (and older poorer pensioners)... thats my only point on this thread. For what its worth I'd be happy to put a couple of pence on Income tax it it went on health/ education or indeed some form of means tested pension increase

Funny isn't it these people have so much to say about politic issues but in over 9 months never posted then surprise surprise its a life long labour supporter don't you dare call me a tory but you have to give it to them....... 😁

Jam - think it was about Xmas that signed up to the website (perhaps March when access was allowed). Posted a few times but generally just like to look especially on footy or posts like Erimus bikes rides :) . Like the website for many reasons but gives me an attachment to home.

I am not a lifelong Labour supporter, most of the time not all the time

Personally I like almost everything about Keir Starmer but disliked many things about Corbyn. I am glad Labour didnt have a chance where I live as I would have to have held my nose to vote for him. Lib Dem is the only choice which isnt Tory.

Again Starmer is everything I believe in - principled, thoughtful, balanced and with a strong social conscience. I think he would look after the Economy a 100x better than Corbyn and McDonald and hence a chance for real social change. However not saying I am right on that, just my view.
